eral manager Greg Moon said
Monday he was delighted
with the vote.

CAIMAW regional vice-
president Roger Crowther
said Monday the agreement
is sub-standard in wages to
other contracts negotiated by
workers in other B.C. hotels.

With the new contract,
wages are still $1 to $1.50 an
hour lower than the going
unionized industry rates, but
Crowther said union negoti-
ators managed to double the
original offer from the em-
ployer.

Over the two years, em-
ployees will get a compound-
ed 14 per cent increase. That
means a hostess will get
$7.50 an hour now and $7.75
an hour next April, up from
the current $6 non-union
wage paid by the hotel. A
bartender will increase to
$8.65 and $9.30 next year
from $8.10 an hour.

VANCOUVER (CP) — The
British Columbia-Yukon
ision of the Canadian Red
Cross is confident its supply
of blood will not be destroyed
by the same refrigeration
malfunction that occurred on
the weekend in Ontario.

The B.C.-Yukon division
forwarded 450 units of blood
to Ontario, which needs blood
after a refrigerator malfune-
tion destroyed the central
Ontario Red Cross blood
bank supplies in Toronto.

About 3,000 units of red
blood cells (the product of
3,000 blood donations) were
lost from the downtown Tor-
onto blood bank when coolant
leaked from a refrigerator.

A total of about 2,000 units
of blood were being flown
and trucked to Toronto on
Monday night from the 16
other Red Cross centres
across Canada.

A similar accident should
not happen in British Col-
umbia, however.

“We have an alarm system
that goes off if the tempera-
ture of the blood bank rises
