This is the second campout experience for the Grade 6 students who attended a simi- lar Blueberry camp at Syringa Park last year, also organized by the school, The theme of this. year's camp was Canada's Birthday, with each tent group adopting the name of a pioneer group; The Canadian Voyageurs, In- dians of Canada, Miners of Barkerville, and The Acadians, The focus was thus on Canadian history, with class skits and talks presented by the stu- dents, As well, Craig Andrews, Selkirk College professor and local historian, gave a talk on Canadian and West Kootenay history and lore. Climax of the history ex- perience came on Friday night with a ceremonial Canada Birthday Celebration and a special supper and awards for the campers, Besides the historical theme, other topics were in- cluded, such as water safety, conservation, forest fire pre- vention, survival, and first aid —with special guests a1 ing periodically at camp to talk to the children about their work, ,RCMP Constable Norm Blaney arrived the first day and talked to the children about boating and canoeing safety, and Niel Fipkey from the B.C. Quick Air Crash Payout The federal cabinet has authorized government partici- pation in an arrangement that -would provide quick out-of- court settlements of claims for families of victims of the Feb- ruary jet crash at Cranbrook, transport ister Otto Lang announced Thursday night of last week. Lang said in a news release the arrangement, still to be finalized by all parties con- cerned, would permit compen- sation before the courts have assessed blame resulting from the Pacifie Western Airlines crash that took 43 lives. He said it clears the way for creation of a multimillion dollar insurance pool. Parti- pants would be Alberta-owned Pacifie Western Airlines, the City of Cranbrook and the Boeing Company of Seattle, Wash, Lang said under federal law the government is pre- vented from putting any money into the pool, However, the pool would have sufficient money from the participants to meet immediate demands. Ottawa will contribute its money later if the courts deter- mine there has been any federal liability, he said. pate in the insurance pool until they know where Ottawa stands. Lang has been under strong pressure from the Oppo- sition in the Commons and from elsewhere to join the pool, an action he kept saying is illegal. TROUBLED BY HIGH PRICES ? It was registration day for parents to register their chil- dren for the summer swim Program and recreation pro-" gram, There were at least 100 People or more who stood ina line-up for two and three hours just to register one child or More, because they had two women at one table who took all the registrations from pre- beginners to adult swimming; _ one wrote our receipts and the other one wrote down names, Hardly enough staff for the amount of people who were there, re were mothers with babies in arms, and little tots who had to wait this length of time and I think it is just ridiculous. Tam sure that our regional * recreation manager could come up with a better organized way to register children in these programs. I suggested that there had to be a better way to do this and he said to me, they have tried different ways and they haven't worked, but it is quite obvious this way isn't working either. So we could sure do with another way.
