That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.’ So I went forth and finding the hand of God, trod gladly into the night. And He led me toward the hillsiand the breaking of the day in the lone East.” Minnie Louise Haskins as quoted by the late King George V1 in his Christmas broadcast 1989. “Her life,” says the obituary, "was filled with joy and caring. As a mother, grandmother; teacher and friend she left some of herself in all of our lives.” And no one, in our opinion, is more deserving of such an accolade than its recipient, the late Jeannie Magdolitie; Magwood. “ rh as she was known to all of her many friends here on the coast, died in Vancouver on Aug. t6 of this year after a Jong illness and was buried on Alig: 17 from the Chilli- wack United Church. Molly was born at Loon Creek in the Northwest Ter- ritories in 1902 before Manitoba became a province. She was one of the four children ‘of Solomon Brubacker Musselman, a Methodist (later United) Church lay preacher, and Fanny Eliza Musselman, who as Fanny Smith had won the governor's gold medal at the Toronto Normal School. After completing her collegiate (high school) she started teaching at age 17 in Saskatchewan's country school system. Here she met fellow: teacher Magwood. They were married, the first couple to do so in the new church at Hoosier, by her grandfather, Smiley. In 1946 the couple together with their two children, Fran and Joan left their farm home in Maple Creek, Sask. and moved to Robson where George had charge of the two-room Castlegar-Robson High School. The other staff member was former Castlegar teacher, Bill Shakwarok. When I enrolled my first class of grade 9s in the old. Robson Church hall in 1947 the high school staff soared to Molly went immediately to summer school where she obtained her senior matric and then proceeded to classes ~ in the teaching of the learning handicapped. It was in this relatively new niche that she found: her true vocation so that about 1950 she and Dr. Hugh Keenleyside esta- blished the Maple School in Trail:< the first school for the handicapped in the Kootenaya., JOHN CHARTERS’ Reflections & Recollections + « » Molly Magwood's husband Goatees sixth ftom the right in front row, taught at jlumphries high school. George died of cancer in Jan. 17, 1967 and Molly was crippled by's stfoke in 1979 and had to leave the city. She When Bob Sommers, prini Elementary School (about where courthouse is now) took this area for the Socreds and was appointed Minister of Lands, Mines and Forests in 1953, George ‘went to Victoria with him as his liaison officer. Molly got a job in the Royal Jubilee Hospital as a teacher of long term children patients and as a learning handicapped teacher. One of her most successful patients in this latter category was a totally helpless cerebral palsy patient, Donnal Pistell, whom she first taught to type, using two fingers while lying in the prone position. With this skill established, Molly was then able to guide her pupil through -y, then -y and on to iy education levels. Today Miss Pistell is a published poet. It was the gift of the merry eye which, like that of my own mother, remained with her to the end to lift the spirits of those around her. She is survived, says the obituary, by her son Jon itep- and three step-gi her daughter, Fran, and son-in-law, Bill Matkin, and four h of Ne icks, a popular United Church minister in Cy forth and Robson during the 40s and a longtime, close friend of the Magwoods. He put the entire matter in perspective with his opening remark, “We are celebrating a joyful life.” This is confirmed byy Mrs. Bob Walkie who recalls Molly as a warm and vital woman who not only took an active part in the life of the. Robson Community Church and local women’s groups but was “the most marvellous baby sitter I ever had.” - “She had”, Mrs. Walkie said, “A wonderful way with children and I never saw a child who wouldn't come to her It might have added, “And countless hundreds of the rest of us, her friends and pupils, who were lighten- ed by her laughter and who warmed ourselves at her heart.” 4 Even as I write I can see her beloved George always guardsman, slim and erect, stand a little higher on his good leg, giving that small enigmatic twitch to his eyebrow and smiling his humorous, enigmatic smile of approval.
