citizens and people with
chronic health problems that
make them particularly vul-
nerable to influenza should
get annual flu shots soon.

The National Advisory
Committee on Immunization
says vaccination is the single
most effective way of pre.
venting flu in people at high
risk of serious illness or
death

“Most people at high risk
are already under medical
care and should be vacci-
nated during regular fall
visits,” the committee says.

In addition to people 65
and older, high-risk groups
for flu include people with
chronic heart and lung prob-
lems, diabetes, cancer, kid.

“Chronic cardiac and pul
monary disorders in people
over the age of 45 years are
by far the most important
risk factors for influenza-re-
lated death,” the committee

FEW GETS SHOTS

The committee of experts
inside and outside govern
ment has long been concern
ed about the small number of
poeple who take advantage of
the vaccine. For reasons un-
known, perhaps only 20 per
cent of those in high-risk

groups get flu shots every
fall.

The flu season generally
gets under way in Canada in
late November. It tends to
start on the west Coast and
work its way east.

Last winter was a rela
tively mild one for flu. Most

of the cases confirmed by
laboratory tests were of a
new strain called Taiwan flu,
and the strain turned out to
be relatively mild.

It's anyone's guess how
many cases of flu occur in
Canada in a typical winter.

A former Castlegar resident who rescued two men
from a burning helicopter that crashed in the back yard of
his Quesnel home Saturday, says he’s no hero.

“I don’t think there's no such thing as a hero,” says
Keith Watkin.

Watkin heard an explosion. while he was serving
breakfast to his two young daughters, Laura, 11, and
Erin, 3. Despite having worked a long graveyard shift
at the Weldwood pulp mill, his trained firefighter’s
reflexes were not slowed any

Within seconds he was outside running toward the
flaming wreckage of a helicopter that had slammed tail up
with a sound “like jake-brakes on a truck, only four or five
times as loud,” against birch trees 20 metres from his
house.

‘The helicopter, crewed, by two geophysical sur-
veyors, had taken off in patchy fog from a hotel helipad a
stone's throw from the house, and apparently. clipped
power lines before crashing nose down in Watkin's back
yard.

With a full tank of jet fuel, the chopper came down &
few steps from a mobile home that had 60 gallons of
propane, and 70 gallons of gasoline stored in it. Watkin
arrived at the scene rad as the helicopter started to
catch fire,

“To Mn Wenig I was shit-scared,” said Watkin.
“As I ran, I wondered, ‘Am I gonna remember what to
do,’ then my training took over.

The 45-year-old pulpmill worker dragged the pas-
senger out from underneath the wreckage and carried
him to the far side of the motor home. When he returned
the pilot was starting to move. Watkin pulled him out and

Within five minutes the fire department was on the
scene, foaming down the flames. During that time, the
injured pilot,,and passenger had received medical
attention from Watkin's neighbors, many of whom had
professional medical skills.

Inside workers at the Castlegar
post office were on the job today, but
could walk out at any time as part of
the Canadian Union of Postal Workers’
plan to launch selective rotating
strikes.

“Everything is business as usual,”
Castlegar postmaster Roy McNeil said
in a telephone interview. He also
reported the mood among workers is
“good.”

However, Ben Fietz, president of
the Castlegar CUPW local, said work-
ers are “tense.”

“It’s bound to be (tense),” Fietz
said.

Castlegar has 16 inside workers —
10 full-time and six part-time.

Asked if he expects any trouble if
Castlegar workers are instructed to
walk out, Fietz replied: “There may be
this time, depending on how angry
