Wednesday, March 4, 1992, Heat efficiency with pellets (SNS) Wood, the oldest source of heat endrgy, has now become one of the most environmentally friendly fuels available for the heating of your home—but only in the form of compressed wood pellets. Special wood pellet-burning stoves, fireplaces and fireplace inserts have been developed over he last decade that dramatically reduce polluting emissions to the atmosphere. The wood used to make the pellets is usually “waste” wood products from lum- ber producing mills, sawdust, wood chips and solid wood waste. Solid wood waste consists of trimmings at the sawmill, culled-out wood unsuitable for lumber and shavings from the planing mill. Pellet heaters now available in Kaslo are the Scott and the Pellet King. The Scott resembles a stan- dard wood stove, complete with a glass and brass trimmed door for viewing the fire. But that’s where the si they do not produce smoke. At many home shows in Canada, numerous pelict heaters were on ytoa wood Stove stops The “firebox” or pellet burning combustion chamber is small, not much bigger than two-cupped hands. By controlling the amount of wood pellets fed to the com- bustion, and blowing air to the small fire. it is kept very hot, the rate of pellet feed, and conse- quently, the fire temperature is controlled by a wall thermostat that the room isplay in operation, and the emissions were simply renee through a short jiece of pipe exited into the air of the building. A wood product heater installed in the home can be simply vented out through the wall of a home. Expensive chimneys required for standard wood stoves are climi- nated. The clean burning, as well as the efficiency, is made possible by pellet manufacturers such as ture at the desired setting The combustion process of pel- let heaters results in both a very high efficiency rating, as well as low atmospheric emissions. Some wood pellet heaters have a com- bustion efficiency of over 98.5 per cent and an overall efficiency of up to 90 per cent. This makes pellet heaters up to 10 times bet- ter than a standard fireplace and up to three times better than a Standard wood stove. Pellet heaters are so clean burning that Scmen of today's moet popeler the pany in Creston who meet established standards for wood pellet manufacturing. The wood pellet industry continues to develop in Canada as the number of pellet heater dealers, such as Kootenay Pellet Heaters, in Kaslo increase. Regardless of the type of screening you have, proper care starts with an inspection. The best time to do this is when you give your windows a good washing. For most this is usually twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall, when screens are put up or taken down for the season. When checking your screens, make sure the retaining spline (the rubbery strip that anchors screen- ing to a frame) is tightly in place. If it isn’t, you can easily put it back into the spline channel by using a concave hand roller tool. If the spline is worn or dam- aged, or has become brittle, you can buy a replacement spline and a hand roller at local hardware stores. home centers or building supply dealers. Also check for holes and tears. Large gaps usually cannot be repaired, but you might want to patch smaller holes. For very small holes - one-quar- ter inch or so - a light touch-up with glue may do the job for one season. Epoxy is best for aluminum screen- ing, while clear household cement is best for fiber glass. For larger holes, iron-on patches are available for fiber glass screens. A method suitable for all screens is to cut a patch from a piece of metal screening about one or two inches large on all sides than the area to be covered. Then, bend the loose strands of the patch through the screen mesh. Fiber glass and aluminum replacement screening - like replacement spline - is available at most local retailers. Be sure to measure the exact screen size you need to replace, since screen cloth comes in several widths. It also is available in dif- ferent colors and mesh sizes, so you may want to take a small sam- ple to make sure the new screens match the old ones. If the screen frames are dam- aged, many dealers offer complete screens in standard sizes. Or, you can call a local screen shop.
