Geologist rolls out rocks
for look at local history

In those dim ages lost in time, the con-
tinents of the world collided and formed
one huge land mass, geologists believe.

Last Saturday night she gave an infor-
mative slide show presentation at Syringa
Creek Provincial Park, as she does every
summer, sharing with the audience her
knowledge of rocks in the Ki ys and

They then split in two, one of the land
masses being North America, joined to-
gether with Europe and Africa. In time,
North American split away and started
moving westward.

About 150 million years ago, this huge
land mass collided with the ocean plate,

the stories they tell.

According to Anderton, the upper bench
in Kinnaird and the area of the cemetery,
known as the Kinnaird terraces, resulted
from the sediment building up against the
glaciation of the last ice age about 15,000
years ago.

Another notable terrace formation,
seen from the Kinnaird bench, is in Pass
Creek at an elevation of about 3,300 me-
tres.

“The mountians in our area were prob-
ably as huge as the Himalayas,” she said.
The Rocky Mountains and the coastal
mountains did not yet exist.

Meanwhile, the ocean plate sinking in
the collision with the continental mass
produced a chain of volcanic islands, of
which Mt. St. Helen and Mt. Baker are
notable examples. Anderton says geolo-
gists believe that the volcanoes of the Cas-

The oldest rock in our area is about 1.5
billion years old, she says. It was found
near Creston and is believed to have been
formed in what was then a coastal sea.

“This was probably the edge of North
America,” says Anderton, citing a modern
theory of continent formation.

In this view, “this area, the Kootenays,
was the very western edge of the conti-
nent, with the rest of (present day) British
Columbia somewhere off in the seas. “The
only life there was in the sea.”

The land, she thinks, was miles and
miles of “nice sandy beaches.”

Anderton notes that the rock quarry op-
erated by Salmo resident Iris Bakken
“were the sands of the edge of the conti-
nent.”

That was about 600 million years ago.
But the evidence of shellfish found locally
Suggests that the ocean continued to wash

activities to this day — “got going 400 mil-
lion years ago, and are still going on as we
discovered in 1980 when Mt. St. Helen
erupted.”

tive fault line called the Slocan Lake
Fault, a deep, ancient fissure starting at
Slocan Lake — the Slocan Lake viewpoint
is located right above it — passing under

the Pass Creek valley, past Mt. Sentinel
outside Castlegar, then running on the
east side of the Columbia River to a place
near Champion —_

Lakes — are ample geological proof of vol-
canic fireworks millions of years ago.
“If you have hot springs, you must have

50 and 80 million years
ago, that produced the Rockies and the
coastal mountains “with a big shove from
the west.” .

Locally, the catastrophic upheavals
have caused a reappearance of ancient
crust from about 1.6 billion years ago. An-
derton says the Valhalla mountain range
represents a mix of the rock formations
from 1.6 billion and 50 million years ago.

Around 50 million years ago, the rivers
of today began carving out major valleys
in the area.

Anderton says the Columbia had “cut
down quite rapidly.” But not so the Koote-
nay, and there’s some evidence that this
river was once two rivers.

The continental journey west still con-
tinues. Anderton said the North American
continent is moving west at a rate of two

nee glacier “were sticking out above the

The retreating ice left a series of high-
level terraces on the terrain such as are
visible in south Castlegar, while the valley
was one huge lake.

The terraces became “useful for roads
and railways” of the future, she said.

Along with the overview of geological
history, Anderton’s presentation included
a display of rocks produced by local turbu-
lations of the earth’s crust in plentiful
amounts in mines of the Slocan Valley,
around Nelson, on Kootenay Lake and in
the Rossland-Trail area.

The rocks, she says, offer proof that the
geology of the area is “very varied,” which
is also true of the geology of the province
in general.

Anderton teaches geology at Selkirk

cheon at the Heritage Inn at
noon. Topics of discussion
include B.C. Hydro taxation, the
concerns of hotel owners,
forestry and tourism
