If you have been reading them as thought- fully as I have, you Probably will share my concerns. For time after time we have been reading about the young people who, according to their own statements, en- joy heavy metal music (which can only be described as rebellious and filled with lyrics which the recent Time, magazine calls ‘‘dirty words,” have a taste for anything that is shocking, strange and obscene, and whose only motto in life is to be rich and famous (using the end-justifies- the-means method). Fortunately, there were some ex- ceptions among that group of young people. Reading their own statemen- ts, I began asking myself ‘“‘Are these young people really ready to enter society and make a positive impact?” In the Old World, a high-school diploma is still called ‘ta maturity cer- tificate.”’ ‘Are the young people who are graduating today mature? Have they graduated from the school of life? Oh, don’t get me wrong, they caught the world’s values very well! Beauty, intelligence, money and ac- complishment are the four attributes valued most highly in our society. However, the young people are seldom told that only very few suc- ceed. And when young people first discover that they are lacking in one (or all four) of these characteristics, they begin sliding downward in despair. They become overwhelmed by a feeling of hopelessness that we call ‘‘inferiority."’ Some are so dissatisfied with themselves, that they don’t want to live any more. Low self-worth has reached epidemic proportions in today’s society. After having considered many so-called ‘‘solutions,’’ I’m con- vinced that Christianity has the only fool-proof answer to the problem. Did you know that the Bible tells us that God actually hates the four things which our world values most highly? Luke 16:15 states, ‘For that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God."” In other words, God doesn’t measure your worth the way people do. In contrast to the world’s criteria for human worth, two great truths about us as human beings, both truths revealed to us by God, speak to this matter of personal worth. First, a-sense of our specialness is rooted in the knowledge that comes to us from the Biblical teaching of creation. We are not a chance product of evolution but the handiwork of a gracious and loving God. Of mankind, God says in Isaiah 43:1,7: ‘I have created him for my glory. I have formed him; yea, I have made him."” What a special thing, to know that we were formed by God Himself in a unique way of creation. What an exalted purpose we have for being alive, to bring glory to God. Because He created us, we are precious, loved and special in His eyes, even in our deplorable condition. Sinful, yes, but of great value still. Further, the Bible declares that we are special twice over, because we have been redeemed. God's act in redemption conveys the worth He at- taches to every soul. 1 Peter 1:18,19 declares, ‘‘For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed . but with the precious blood of Christ.’” God emphasizes in His Word that each of us is worth more than the Possessions of the entire world and that Christ loves you so much that he would have come and died for you, even if you were the only person living on this planet! And if God can love us that much, just the way we are, why shouldn’t we accept ourselves? One’s beauty, intelligence, wealth or accomplishment are not really the source of ultimate value. God’s creation and redemption give eternal worth to every one of us, and that in- cludes you and me! Oh, how much of our young people need to hear and believe this message today!
