In the eyes of the world my weekend with the iRolling Stones was the freedom trip to end all ifreedom trips. No one but Pierre knew I had Iready left him for a temporary separation. To the rest of Canada, to the newspapers of the world, my escapade was yet another example of what a wicked wife | had : become, flaunting my infidelities in Pierre's face. \ It was all a ghastly mistake: the truth of that Toronto weekend makes { dull reading for anyone who saw the newspapers at the time. It began in- jocently and by accident. Pierre and | reached our decision to part on tiday, March 4, 1977 — our sixth wedding anniversary. : I was packing to leave for New York when a call came from an old friend, Penny Royce, in ‘oronto. “How about dinner with the Rolling Stones?” she suggested, half-joking. ; “Why not?" I replied, “I'm . I've just left Pierre.” Penny had checked me into Harbor Castle Hotel, be- ise the Stones were staying sthere and we could sneak into sthieir suite for the dinner she in ‘the El Mocambo, a ‘ightclub that reminded Mick Stthis first London club engage- ‘Ment. To discourage mobs of , the management had kept ir visit a secret. When the Stones.appeared n-stage there was almost a riot ‘among the audience. It was a spectacular, memorable eve- ning, and it was an honor to be there. Afterwards Penny and I went back to the hotel on our own and had a drink. At three in the morning there was a loud thumping on my door. I groped my way out of bed, wearing white cotton pyjamas, opened the door and found Paul Wasserman, the Stones’ publicity manager, lurching about in the corridor. “My lady, a gift,” he pro- A NEW FAMILY for my first film, Kings and Desperate Men: Patrick McGoohan and Jamie Brown. © Margaret Trudeau By this time it was too late to leave for New York that night, so I went to eat with Ronnie -Wood and the Stones’ drummer, Charlie Watts. They dropped me back at the hotel before midnight, saying they were off to a recording session, At 5 a.m. I got a call from nounced with rather drunken .. . we gallantry, showing me a bottle’ of cheap Canadian champagne in a plastic container. I pointed over my shoulder to my darkened room. “I'm not having a party. Take it away.” I laughed. “I don't like sweet champagne at this time * of night." He staggered off. Next afternoon, about to leave for New York, I bumped into Ronnie Woods, the Stones’ guitarist. “Hey, where are you off to? Aren't you coming to tonight's session?" : I hesitated, “I'm not a groupie. I can't possibly.” “Why don’t you work, then? Take some photographs.” It seemed the perfect solution. What was I going to do in New York anyway? And wouldn't this be a fine start to * my new career? I put on my jeans jumpsuit and snapped away hard with my cameras all evening. Next afterncon I prepared once again to leave Toronto, This time I heard a timid rattling on my door handle. Outside stood a skinny, pale little boy wearing a jogging suit. He was in tears. It was Marlon, Keith Richards’ seven- year-old son. “Where is everybody? Where are they?” he sobbed. “Dad's lying on the floor crying. What shall I do?" I went with him to the Stones’ suite and‘ found that Anita Pallenberg, Marlon’s mother, was out shopping, and that Keith was indeed curled up on the floor in a fetal position, moaning. : His case, for possession of heroin for trafficking, was due to come up the next day in court. Marlon and I dragged him off the floor and laid himon his bed. I covered him with a blanket. I couldn't abandon the child, so, clearing a space among the dirty plates, empty bottles and garbage that litter. ed the room, I settled on the floor to help him glue together a model airplane. He had a lot of expensive toys he couldn't understand, intended for far older children. the lobby: “It’s us. We're back. Can we come up? How about a game of dice?” For the Stones, day is night and night is day. Slightly bemused, I climbed into my jeans, and hastily made my bed before the whole group clatter- ed into my room, in high spirits D” By the’ tidiesitéached’ New ' York «the: scandal’ ad. -ex- ploded: ‘Prime Minister's Wife and Rolling Stones.’ ‘Margaret in Hotel Corridor in White Pajamas.’ ‘Sex Orgy in Canadian Prime Minister's Wife's Suite.‘ A GIRL LIKE ME should have known what trouble nice into. © Georges Pierre and drunk with the euphoria that comes from an all-night working session. “O.K. At nine o'clock we’ drew back the cur- tains on a cold gray niorning and ordered coffee. One by one the Stones departed to their own rooms to sleep. Ronnie was the last to leave. : Late Tuesday morning I left for New York. This time in the corridor, I bumped into Paul Wasserman. He looked surprised to see me still around,, gave mea wave, and passed on. I never saw the Stones again. . By the time I reached New York the scandal had exploded: “Prime Minister's Wife and Rolling Stones,” “Margaret in Hotel Corridor in White Py- jamas,” “Sex Orgy in Canadian Prime Minister's Wife's Suite."
