SLOCAN VALLE Y Water meet planned The Slocan Valley Watershed Alli ance will host a second FLOW (For Love of Water) conference. Conven- ing at the Winlaw Hall July 2 and 3, this conference will be the first sequel to the well-attended FLOW conference the Alliance held in 1984. With its focus on the topic of logging in watersheds, the purposes of FLOW '88 are to bring together water users from throughout British Columbia to discuss effective water- shed management and to design a citizen's action plan to implement sound watershed management. Con- ference organizers have planned the two days around several workshops and discussion sessions designed to make FLOW participatory. In one workshop, Bill Andrews, director of the West Coast Environ- mental Law Association, will sum- marize the current status of legis- lation relating to water protection, and will outline legislation required to adequately protect water — in- cluding the dimension of liability. Rick Smith, David Zirnhelt and Lorne Dufour — loggers from the Quesnel-Williams Lake area — will lead workshop on methods of logging that constitute economically viable alternatives in watershed manage- ment. Herb Hammond, a Slocan Valley- based consulting forester, will lead a workshop on the sensitive ecology of watersheds and the dangers of conventional logging practices, as well as on what it effective ence with both government-spon- sored public-involvement programs and other types of environmental- protection action. Afterwards, parti- cipants will form into strategy and FINISHING TOUCHES .
