TUCKETT TROPHY HERE, Beautiful Prize Won by Rossland Curling jub. 3 The beautiful Tuckett prize presented the Koot Curling A by Rossland has passed the exp atage and prices of real estate have set- tled down to figures which plainly show that owners have every confidence in the permancy of the camp. Every busi- ness house in town has an occupant, either an owner or 2 tenant who is pay- ing fair rent. It does not appear that the boom of other localities is hurting Rossland to any noticeable extent. We are free to admit that many good men who havehelped materially to make Rossland and who are valuable in build- ing up a new town or country have lelt and are leaving Rossland for the Boun- dary country and Republic, but their places are befng taken by men of meane who prefer to take less chances with their money. ‘When the members of a gentlemen’s club so far forget themselvesas to black. ball so prominent « personage as the tal- ented, .réfined and accomplished At- torney-General Martin, it is fall time for them to change the name of their club, and we would therefore suggest that Badman’s club would not be much of a change than the Bodminton” club for the. Victoria gentlemen who belong to it. A petition is being circulated and largely signcd asking the mayor and the city council to pass a bylaw to be sub- mitted to the people for the purpose of borrowing money for to put ina water and light plant. The people would like: o know which. is to be done and something near what the expense will be and when the system will be com- pleted ifone is putin. Ifthe city is to buy the present plant the ratepayers would like to know what itis to cost. The Record would suggest that another attempt be made to purcbase the plant now in operation, and if satisfactory terms cannot be made, then put in one. But the people are entitled to know all about it before evera bylaw is intro- duced to raise money for the municipal ownership of a water and light plant. " REPUBLIC BOOMING. Plenty of Development Work—Crowds of fa sPeople Flocking in. T. I, Helm. returned. last evening from the Republic country, where he has been for the past month superin- tending development work on .proper- ties in‘ which he is interested. He speaks in glowing terms of the future prospect of the Reservation country. “I personally examined some 18 proper- ties now being worked there, within a radiue of three miles of the centre of town, and found that each one was working in ore that run over $30 per ton, and within a radius of four miles of the city, there are at least 45 properties being developed, every one of which has a favorable showing at some point on the claim. “Every stage coming into town is loaded down with The Tuckett.& Sons, the cigar merchants of Hamilton, Ont., arrived last night and ison exhibition in J. W. Spring’s win- dow. During the late icé carnival it was competed for and won by a Roseland rink, skipped by A. B. Cranston.~ | It is a solid silver raised platform, 10 by 14 inches square, with a smooth sur- Jace, representing ance rink, and the ‘sides are handsomely pannelled and four large silver posta or pillars on the,cor- ners, Near the center of the plate is a handsome silver statue of a man about eight inches in height. He isin the act of “putting” a atone while holding a broom with his left hand with one end resting upon the 1ce. The stane is of oxidized silver repre- senting grey granite. The whole affair ie mounted on a solid metal base 18 x 24 inches costabout #90 and isone of the most handsome trophies presented. FIRE CHIEF GUTHRIE. They had a late sitting last night or at least sume of the club had and it was the smell hours,.of the morn- ing when they went home. ‘The cause of all this trouble was the man who hasbeen causing all the trouble in the province lately—nobody else but Hon Joseph Martin. ‘The Badminton club has -a different method of electing members than is pursued in most clubs, they do not simply put 2 man’s name up and have him balloted for.
