WEEKLY; One Year, in advance. Six months, in advance Single copy MONDAY, JUNE 21, 1897. STILL APOLOGIZING. The Sunday morning paper comes forward with the following excuse for not furnishing tne telegraph: “The Canadian Pacific telegraph wires went down last evening, and stayed down, too. This is our only apology for a lack of telegraphic news this morn- ing.” That might do if the telegraph could not have been obtained from Spokane, but it could, if they had been able and willing to have paid for it. It would be all right to thus let it go, if that sheet did not boast of carrying ‘‘all the tele- graph,” and sparing no expense in get- ting it. This is one of the ‘indications’ that point to the day they may not be able to settle all their financil difficulties with “ $11.65.” WORLD'S OWN MISTAKE. The Recorp took occasion a few days ago to criticise the Vancouver World for some loony advice it was giving the pub- lic, and here is the way it comes back: “© Tae Ross.anpD EveNIna REcorD, in that charming style for which it ie noted, says the Vancouver World knows about as much about mining as a hog does about Sunday—the word ‘‘about’’ three times in a line and a half would seem to indicate that our contemporary is hard up for Saxon words, although it has learned the language of the gutter with great fuci 1 arances. It then proc vice on its own account, which evidently mean that the people of British Colam- bia are hereafter required to take noticé that only in the Recorp can such be re- lied upon, We are sorry for the Recor, but we must point out to it that in thus posing as the one and ont ad- viser it has made itself the faugl- undary The Rxcorp eays that the clause reads as follows: ‘The holder of a mineral claim shall be entitled to all minerals to mine, outside the Pounder lines of his clai This is neither good sense nor woe yrammar and it is not truthful. tact it Recorp grammar. The clause reads: ‘*The holder of a mineral claim shall be entitled to all minerals which may lie within his claim; but he shall not be entitled to mine outside the boundary lines of his claim continued vartically downwards.” ‘his puts a and. different complexion on the clause forever disposes of the Recorp’s claim to be considered an authority on mining matters.’ The section as quoted by us was taken from the World. We ask it to look over the issue which contained the mineral act and answer ifthe Recorp did not quote it correctly. Of course, we ought to have known better than to have taken the World as authority. SITUATION IS PRECARIOUS. Un§on Pacific Tries to Down the Ni Through Line. New Chicago, June 17.—The executive com- mittee of the Western Passenger Associ- ation met today for the purpose of con- sidering rates in the west. Representa- tives of the Denver & Rio Grande and Oregon Short Line were present. The meeting accomplished nothing of con- sequence up to a late hour, and the feel- ing is general that it will require a meet- ing of the presidents of the western roads to straizhten out the muddle. It is probable that the Oregon Short Line will make a hard fight against the Union Pacific. Some of the roads which are against the Union Pacific in this fight are of the opinion that itand the Alton and Northwestern, which have sided with it, are playing a large game of bluff, and that the entire matter will in a short time be found to be nothing but a tempest in a tea pot. The ofticials of the Alton and the Northwestern say there is no bluff in the matter, and they propose to stand by the Union Pacitie, no matter what comes. Itis likely ‘that another meeting will be held within a few days to settle the trouble. It is conceded on all sides that the rate situation ia more pre- cartons just now than at any time since 1890. —— (QUEEN’S JUBILEE, Rossland, June 19, 1897. The fitting tribute paid to England’s Queen; the deep sympathy shown for the early struggle of the pilgrim fathers and the sparks of admiration strack off at the mention of such men as Lincoln, Garfield and Washington, appealed to Americans and English ahke, in the sermon which Rev. Best of the Baptist church preached yesterday morning. For his text he chose the 33 chapter, 15 verse of Exodus: ‘‘And he said unto him, if thy presence go not with me carry me not up hence.” He prefaced his sermon with a close drawn word picture of Moses’ God-like nature. Moses went among the people and plead with them to forsake their idolatary worship and_ follow him. They obeyed. Moses then had to deal with God himself, who was incensed against the Jewish peopte. God said that the Jews were a lot of stiff-necked people, but Moses pled with him to come back to the people. Moses in Egypt, as the son of Pharo, had everything to satisfy an ambitious man. He was a young man at that time, but threw aside his brilliant pros- pects to return to his people the Hebrew, whom he knew were slaves. He threw off the allegiance of Pharo, and went back to slavedom todefend his people. Such unselfishness is seldom written on the pages of history. Some men love power, office influence, admiration and popularity, yet Moses cast all of these aside to take up the burdens of a people manacied with the chains of slavery. Moses was driven into the desert where he staid 40 years. During this time God came to him and asked “Moses to lead his people. Moses replied, ‘I cannot do it,” but finally said, “L won’t go unless I have your presence.” “I wish to say something regarding our Queen,” said the minister. “We have reached the time when not only British subjects, hut the whole world we its knees to the greatness of a great Queen, She has not only her colonies in India, in Canada, in Australia, SOME BURNING WORDS: CHOU OF bbb: ‘The Church of England was not larg enough to hald the large crowd thay went to enjoy the special jubilee pro- vom rendered there Sunday evening.
