After getting shellacked by Trail in a pair of games just prior to the tournament, the Sr.Novice's beat out that same Trail team on their way to finishing fifth in their-division cream of the crop as they cop top honors at Selkirk College’s Athletic Awards Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR Success, like a shadow, tends to follow some people around. Take for example cross-country runner Jennifer Small and volley- ball player Darren Ettles, the two most successful athletes at Selkirk College this school year. The golden shadow that was theirs all year, came with them again Wednesday night when they were named the College’s Student Athletes of the Year at its awards dinner at the Community Com- plex. Free Agent, page 16 Surprised, elated and grateful, the two University Transfer students said it was tough work, but worth it. “I’ve been running all my life and never really been recognized for it, so I’m really happy to be recognized as a cross country runner,” Small said. “At the end of.a season of hard work and giving up things, I was happy to get it,” Ettles said. The College’s highest athletic SCHOOL SPORTS The 1992 Milk Run — the one- day province- wide run, walk wheel three- kilometre event in which over 80,000 students from 200 secondary schools will participate — is set for April 22.This year’s recipient of proceeds from the run is the B.C. Blind Sports and Recreation Association. Last year, the event raised over © $80,000. for charity. honors capped an honor-filted—| season for the pair. Small, 20, won the B.C. Cross Country Running Championship, was third in the Interprovincial Championships and — perhaps her biggest accomplishment of the season — came third in the UBC _ Triathlon in Vancouver. Whatever the race, no matter who the competition, Small either won or exceeded all expectations, said College athletic director and Saints cross-country coach Sally Willis. And while Small excelled individually, Ettles stood out as a member of the Saints men’s volleyball team. Ettles, 21, was named a first team all-star in the 10-team B.C. Colleges Athletic Association, and the Saints most valuable player.
