Many of the paintings in the exhibition, part of the Presentation Series, are on loan from local residents, while others are from Pryce’s own collection. The earliest painting is a romantic watercolor scene done in 1955. The latest is a light-hearted watercolor called “Laughing Tree.” completed a few months ago. Pryce is well known in the area. Recently retired from teaching, he has taken an active part in community projects such as the Castlegar Multicultural Society, the Doukhobor Museum, and the Hospice Society. PRYCE-LESS . . . Later, he was a teacher in the junior high school and. at elementary schools in Robson, Woodland Park and Ootischenia, where he taught mainly art. Largely a self-taught artist, Pryce has taken some university-level art courses. He has been painting since a small child and is currently completing a book of poetry. The paintings on display at the Homestead reveal changes in his style to suit the taste of those for whom he paints. His style ranges from realism to expressionism and surrealism to the abstract. “Symbolism is an important element of many of his works, frequently backed by his knowledge of natural history,” says a prepared release issued by the Castlegar Arts council, which sponsors the Presentation Series. Most of his painting are in watercolor and ink, but he occasionally paints in oils and acrylics.
