Thirsting for truth, he had drawn water out of every well of ancient learning, yet never satisfied. On this particular morning he met a friend, and the two men engaged in conversa- tion. As the result of this talk, the life of Justin Martyr was changed. The friend, who had come to believe in God and His Word, showed the Roman how the philosophers rea- soned about truth, whereas the Hebrew prophets spoke the truth. He pointed out to him the prophecies concern- ing the first advent of the Messiah, and how every one was fulfilled in the life of Jesus. Taking his friend's advice, Justin began the study of the Old Testament prophecies and their fulfillment. This conviaced him of the truth of Christianity, and he became one of its defenders and a heroic martyr. Prophecy challenges men to believe in the Eternal One who sees and knows the end from the beginning. As one studies the Old Testament prophecies, one will find the Creator naming men and nations hundreds of years before they arrived on the stage of history. God speaks, and events unfold a thousand Lottery numbers years in advance. With con- fidence we can turn to the New Testament prophecies, knowing that they also will be fulfilled at their appointed season. We would be lost in the darkness, if the voice of divine prophecy did not speak. We have “a light that shines in a dark place” (2 Peter 1:19), to guide our steps aright. God takes us into His confidence, saying, “I have told you before it comes to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might be- lieve.” (John 14:29). As we study the pro phecies, it will confirm our faith in a loving God, who doeth all things well.
