LocdSPORTS Wi Wicked stepmother A’s punish Cinderella Royals to repeat as CMCFL champions Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER Cinderella made an appear- ance at the Castlegar Men’s Com- mercial Fastball League final over the weekend, but so did the |: wicked stepmother. Cinderella, played by the Val- ley Royals, came through the back door to challenge the wicked step- mother, played by the Nelson A’s, for all the marbles Sunday after- noon at Kinnaird Park. But unlike the children’s fairy tale, Cinderella didn’t make it to the ball and neither did the prince. The A’s capitalized on some early defensive miscues by the Tony Kabatoff (left) of the Nelson A's and Ben Lege! ) CMCEL playoffs over the weekend at Kinnaird Park. In Sunday’s final, Kabat 3 to win the title for the second year in a row. Royals to successfully defend their CMCFL title with a 7-3 win. Although the Royals finished in fourth, eight points back of the first-place A’s during the regular season, it was thought that any of the five teams could win it all come Sunday. The A’s thought differently, however. “Give credit to the Nelson Ath- letics for hitting the ball and scor- ing the runs,” Royals coach Kevin Sutherland said. “They're a pret- ty good club and were worthy of the victory.” The Royals were on one leg right from the word go, as they dropped their first game to the Castlegar Merchants. Facing elimination, the Royals scored wins against Big O Tire, the Merchants and Banjo’s Pub before meeting up with the A’s. By that time, they had already played four games Sunday, and Sutherland said that showed in the final. “I think the boys finally ran out of steam,” he said. Sutherland said there nothing surprising about his squad mak- ing the final, as they had been building up to it in the latter stages of the season. “Mostly just peaking at ‘the right time,” he said. “The last three weeks of the season, the boys started playing their best ball of the season.” Coming into the tournament, the A’s were in a bit of a tailspin courtesy of a five-game losing streak. ; But they put an end to that early, dumping the Merchants and Banjo’s before sitting back to find out who they would meet for the final. A’s crown Royals to take CMCFL title A’s Ed Streliaff said the offen- sive contribution of Bill Tarasoff and the return of pitcher of Tony Kabatoff helped turn the team around, “What hurt us a lot was when Tony wasn’t there,” he said, adding that Kabatoff missed most of-the last month due to work commitments. But on Sunday, there was no mistaking that Kabatoff was there. “All his pitches were working,” Streliaff said. Although the local season is over for both teams, they will both be back in action the weekend of Aug. 15 and 16, as the Royals travel to Kelowna to represent the region at the Provincials, while the A’s travel to Christina Lake for a tournament. Apart from the Kelowna meet, where only a handful of team members attended, the Aquanauts have placed in the top two spots all season. But up in Kimberley, the Aquanauts found themselves in third, 83 points back of Nel- son and a whole bunch more behind Colville, Wash: Head coach Tom Carew said with only 28 kids out, he wasn't unhappy with third. “We never get a big turnout for the Kimberley meet,” he said. “A lot of family vacations are on now.” Shelley Stansbury, Teddy Hunter and Neil Jones paced the Aquanauts with silver medals, while Grant Mosby took bronze. With the Kootenay region- als August 8 and 9 in Colville just around the corner, Carew said the next week-and-a-half will be spent fine tuning turns and strokes. , “We'll try to refine the little imperfections,” he said. The Robson River Otters continued their consistent swimming, finishing a strong sixth for the fourth time this season. Kristy Verigin led the way with her first gold medal of the year, while Paul Shingler picked up silver. With only 13 swimmers competing, coach Marie Seghers said.she was happy with the result, adding that be- tween 20 and 25 Otters will make the trip to regionals.
