He was inter- viewed at every town which he visited on the other side of the line, and talked like » rational being; here he wasall gruffness, even to the verge of insolence. It is believed that he has set hig heart onit, and willdo every- thing possible to induce parliament to giveittohim. Will Consider the City Park and Cometery Question. May Buy 400 Board of Trade Souv- enirs and Fix Street Grades. At the city conncil meeting to be held thia evening the park question will comeup. ‘There is 80 acres offered the city east of town at $25 an acre and some of the council is in favor of buying it for cemetery and park purposes. It is held that under the Inw Iund for cemetery purposes can be purchased by resolution without submitting a money by-law tc the peopie. This subject will be discus sed tonight. : The question of fixing street grader will also occupy the attention of thi city council at this evenings session. - The board of trade will ask the city council to buy 400 copies of ‘souvenir re- cently published and pay $100 for them. The idea is to help. the board of trad out, agit is behind about ¢200 on the issue, If the city buys the 400 souvinert it is quite likely that they will be dis- tributed free. It ie proposed to send each member of the dominion houa one and two br three copies to each o! the public libraries throughout eastern Canada, It is thought that the question of sal- aries for the mayor and city council is 2 dead issue, and will not come up any more in the council meetings. It is claimed that the 80 acres the city is thinking of buying for cemetery and park purposes will furnich splendid grounds fora half-mile race course with very little expense. Extra yalue at, M. y yy, but he declined, saying that he had signed Mr. Thompson’s requisi- tion, and would support him. Alderman Lalonde declares that he will not be a candidate for mayor, nor will he consent to stand for re-election asalderman. This is what he said last evening toa representative of the Rec- ORD. : Mr. Goodeve has made a good alder- oan, and it is thought would not object yeriouely to another term if the ratepay- erg insist upon him being a candidate tor re-election. Alderman Clute says he is out of it this year, that he will not consent to stand for re-election. Some say that this—decicion might~ be~ set aside if a requizition aufficiently large was pre- sented to him, _ Alderman .Edgren says since he is not yoing away, as he had thought of doing, he ‘that he might run again, although he be thinks he has made enemies smong the working people by supporting the $2.50 ecale of wages for ordinary street labor. Although that may be true, his friends maintain that he has thereby strength- ened himself with the ratepayers enough 30 to overbalance any votes he might loso on account of it. If Mr. Lalonde does notrun, Alder- man Barrett will probably be the choice of the French Canadians, who claim to be entitled toa representative in the council. Mr. Barrett says he does not know whether he will be a candidate or not. It appears more than likely that Aldermen Barrett and Goodeve will be the only members of the present city council who will allow the use of their names-for re-election. This will leave four new members to be found. ‘ Dr. Reddick is favorably mentioned as @ candidate, and could nodoubt be elected if he consents to stand, and those who claim to know say he willrun. The name of J. Ferguson McCrae ia ly in jon with an aldermanic candidature. He says he is nota candidate, but it is safe to say he will run if properly signed requisi- tion is presented to him, J. Fred Ritchie says positively that he will notallow the use of hisname for Alderman, becaues his private business willkeep him ‘outef the citys great part of the coming year, and would therefore not be able to attend properly othe business ofa city councilman, Even under these circumstances there are many influential ratepayers who in- sist that Mr. Ritchie must go into the souncil—and he may. It is too near the election to bring for> ward men who cannot qualify and be- ~ause there is much: talk of F. W. Rolt snd John McKane as aldermanic candi- lates, the Reconp takes the liberty of -aying upon good authority that they red. not eligible. They are both good itizens and would make good alde:men, wut as we say, it is too late to consider hose who cannot serve. . This covers most of the names promi- tently mentioned so far, and shows up mly four eligible candidates for the council, There are many good men who * vould make good aldermen, and. it ia igh time they were brought to the front, so the public may be allowed to - choose froin them the best material, > - 80 of ee e, -
