Each and every one of the reforms ‘demanded by the Independent Labor purty of this Province may in itself be a just, reasonable and timely reform, but when set forth as the cardinal prin- ciples of a party and’as the guiding lines for members of parliament and ministers they become absurd. There is not a plank in the Labor party platform which could not con- sistently be built into the platform of either of the old parties, and the mistake which Labor leaders make is in not consolidating their efforts the immediate result would be the desired legislation. By antagonizing all other classes of the community with a declaration of lack of sympathy for them, their aims and aspirations, ,the Labor ARRIVAL AND_DEPARTURE OF TRAINS. These views will be more gener- ally realized by the wage earners themselves before election day and as a consequence ‘the leaders will find it impossible to keep their fol- lowers in line. -The one idea party. has always proved a failure. It is too selfish even for poor human na- ture to support with any enthu- siasm, : EDITORIAL NOTES. The coast papers are jubilant about the Stave'lake power scheme having passed under the control of the Hon. C. H., Mackintosh. All of them are agreed that it. means the early utilization of that power for manufacturing ‘purposes in the cities of Vancouver and New West- minster. The Nelson Tribune expresses the opinion that individual members of local unions ‘‘have much to lose and nothing to gain by making their organizations political clubs at a time when the principles of their re- spective organizatiuns are not in any way in jeopardy.” Phair Hotel Improvements, The Phair hotel at Nelson is to be extensively improved at once. The intention is to excavate under the present building, to. bring it down to the street grade, and thus add another story, making the building four stories high. ‘TO ADVERTISERS. The wage earners of Kootenay have taken a most momentous step. Under the leadership of the officers ofthe various labor unions they have formed a political party and cut themselves loose from both the old political parties which comprise the great bulk of the people of this vast Dominion. They have adopted a platform and that platform, consisting of 11 articles, is drawn simply and solely to suit one class and that not by ‘any means embracing a majority of the adults of the country. This, we believe, isa tactical mistake and like all such errors certain in the end to result to the detriment of those guilty of the blunder. ‘Whenever one class in any com- munity sets itself up in opposition to all other classes and undertakes to run things to suit itself without considering the welfare of all the others, it has taken a position which is contrary to public policy, and even when apparently successful at first, it is doomed to defeat and dis- appointment in the end. The wage earners do not repre- sent a majority of the people of Canada. They do net represent even a majority of the people ot Kootenay. Even if they did: their Notice to Conservativen All Conservatives whose names are not on the Provincial voters’ list are requested toattend to this ‘matter at once.
