Page. 10A | : The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, December 42, 1990 ase Revort| : o oie 2 Your Castlegar suSPeN Women see strange glowing ball By BARBARA TANDORY f appeared to be an inverted Sun staff writer ' In our first,Warp Report the headline of an article reporting * an October sighting suggestively stated that “The UFO might have been a boat.” But then again, the boat might have been a UFO, at least on the one night, Sunday, October 14, when Thrums resident Dean Paetkau insisted his three- night sightings began when B.C, Hydro fishery study boat was not on the water. And new information lends support to this more far-out possibility. A weather balloon makes more sense than a mystery. That was how it seemed to a Castlegar area woman who saw a strange glowing ball in the sky over her home in Robson in the company of a visiting relative in October. Fern Allam says she didn't know what she saw until she reported the sighting to the weather office at Castlegar airport and was told she’d seen a UFO, another unidentified flying object in the sky over Castlegar. “I just didn’t know what it was,” said Allam who observed the reddish-orange ball with her stepson Chris. Allam said the aerial object “almost d: shape” that seemed to be coming closer, then seemed to rise and recede in the ance, It looked like some of it faded to one side as they watched, she said, and that’s why it occurred to her that it might have been a weather balloon. Ron Lakeman at the weather office said Allam’s description made it unlikely that the object was a balloon. “If it was that low, a balloon would be rapidly descending; it would not hover,” said Lakeman who took Allam’s call two days after the sighting, The closest places that release balloons are Vernon and Spokane, but no balloons had been reported in the area around this time, , Allam’s. sighting report received additional support from another Robson resident, Marilyn Woods, who was also able to Place the date as most probably October 14. (Allam remembered only that the day was a Sunday in mid or late October, around 7 p.m., but the two women compared noies immediately after the sighting and are in agreement they saw the same object at the same time. ) Woods was just driving into her yard from work at the Blue Top restaurant in Castlegar when she spotted an “orangey” object out of place in the night sky. ‘Woods said it was coming from the direction of Syringa provincial park, stopping briefly to hover over Robson primary school, then floated towards her house at the low height of about 100 ft. in the air, “It was directly above our front steps,” she said. “Tt looked like a glow.” Woods and her fourteen-year- old son watched the object through binoculars but were unable to _ identify it as any familiar object. “Actually the weather balloon Possibility never occurred to me,” said Woods. And for both sets of the witnesses there was something not only mysterious but misty about the sighting. “When it started to disappear, it went into a cloud,” said Woods, “I thought it kept heading into the clouds, There was a mist.” And Allam noted: “We didn’t know whether it went to the cloud or bumed up.” Woods said at the last sighting the object seemed to be going back to where it came from. “It sort of moved towards the (Columbia) river and back towards Syringa, “she said.
