pEPP-]AtK ~ The other day I got a call from Lido Bertoia. Lido was one of a nwnber of people who were active in the formation of the Rossland Colts organization at the time the young Rossland team, under coach Bev Berry, was taking on all comers and winning a good share of the games. They made frequent trips below the border to take on teams as far away as Spokane. It seems the organization was responsible for forming a memorial fund to honor Irvin "Lefty" Lavorato. Part of this fund has been used in the last few years to erect dugouts in Centennial Park out at Black Bear and I understand some more work is contemplated in the near future to further improve the outstanding facilities out there. Centennial Park was the result of many hours of hard work on the part of a nwnber of citizens of our town who took heed when the subject of another park for our youngsters was brought up. I will not try here to name these worthy people, suffice to say it was a concerted effort by a lot of people, under the Colts banner and continued further by the members of our Play-for-Fun league. Lido showed me a memorial plaque, one of which will be placed on each dugout to honor the memory of the Rossland native who graduated to professional ball after 9ui~ an ou~ ding career will be a lot shorter now and not all uphill as they once were. A lot more convenient for me and lots of people around for Mwn's company. The Retirees Curling Club is running the upper course now and we are getting good response from our members, a lot of them taking a turn on the job of collecting green fees. So far, the weather has been great but the old bugaboo of falling leaves is starting to make itself felt and as I write this the sky looks a lot more like a fall sky than it has for awhile. A couple of notes on curling come to mind. Cleve Cowland told me that the Retirees club will hold an organizational meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.,! would imagine we shall find out then when we get started. That meeting will be held in the Retirees lounge at the north end of the arena. Also, Jim Bateman tells us that a mixed curling meeting will be held on Oct. 24 at 7: 30 p.m. in the curling lounge, if you would like to curl and can't make the meeting, you can call Jim at 362-5983 and let him know. If would appear this is to be the year of the offence in local hockey cricles, last weekend the Warriors dropped a couple of highscoring games. A 1()-9 loss to Trial and a tu pasting in Kimberley. When you think about it, that's forty goals in two games with the Warriors getting 17 to the Oe/; 1..2-/S't.; / 1¥ith aarry Pepper and winning a good share of the games. Lefty met an untimely end in an accident at work on the Hill, thus, his name and fame will be remembered whenever Rossland kids and others play in our park which was truly carved out of the wilderness. Well, we are finally settled in here at the Golden- Qty Manor, in a really swell apartment My treks over to the arena during the coming winter our a ot taking a turn on the job of collecting green fees. When you think about it, that's forty goals in two games with the Warriors getting 17 to the opposition's 23. Of course it's early in the season and the defences could start to tighten up after a few games. Nobody ever said the KIJHL is noted for lowscoring games, the fans like a lot of goals. Well, the Cubs went down to defeat and I thought one fan put it quite clearly when he said, "Well, we've wdectfer39yars-;wby notgofor40." And with that we'll say, till next time!
