ie CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, May 20, 1976 From Page 1 Would Save Oil Donald Macdonald and Jack Cullen, minister of national revenue, “The cost of converting to a wood-burning system is high, but it will look cheap 10 years from now compared to the cost of Petroleum products,” he added. . “The unique feature of hog fuel is that it is a byproduct of the very thing which the forest industry processes. For this reason the amount of hog fuel available will always vary na- turally with increases or de- creases in plant capacity at any given time.” Mr, Brisco's proposal in- volves creation of a new capital cost allowance class, coupled with ministerial discretion to ensure that in each case the conversion will not result in tusing wood that. could be diverted to other, more valu- able uses, “Each proposed ‘write-off > would be thoroughly examined ; to determine if it reflects ‘best t-use’ ina given situation,” he 7. sald, The wood scrap gets its name from a machine called a ‘ hogger, which reduces the : material to a uniform size. Mr. Brisco said some sawmills and : pulp mills already use hog fuel } to generate steam for pulp } processing and drying lumber. He said other uses are * possible besides direct genera- { Hon of steam and heat. “One of the most interest- ing is the gasification of hog } fuel by destructive distillation,” he said. “This reaults in the Generation of what is known as ‘producer gas’, a mixture of hydrogen and -earbon ‘monox:- * ide.” He said hog fuel gassifica- *. tion has already been done > successfully in Europe and is ” currently being developed in B.C, by the Ainsworth Lumber Company. i Pay'n - Takit Ltd. Many congratulatory mes- sages were received by the happy couple, from various dignitaries, including Prime Minister Trudeau, Opposition Leader Joe Clark, Premier Bill Bennett, Lt.-Gov,. Walter Owens of B.C., and MP Bob Brisco. Sixty years ago on May 16, 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Jankola were married in the ‘mining town of Pheonix, B.C. When the mine shut down in 1919, they moved to Trail where Mr. Jankola found more steady work at Cominco. ‘They resided in Trail until 1942, then moved, to the former town of. Kinnaird, becoming one of the -fitst pidueers in ‘that area.’ Mrs, ‘Jankola recalls‘ the * hard work involved in clearing the land and planting gardens at that time. On Sunday morning the couple received a telephone Tessage from the Queen's representative. That evening, a famil; reception was held for them at St. Rita’s Church, to which they were driven by a grandson in‘a 1953 Dodge once owned by the couple. Attending the’ recep- tion, along with: the family members, were Rossland-Trail MLA Chris D'Arcy, city repre- sentative Ald Andy Shotek, as well as co-workers from Comin- co, who all expressed their best wishes. Also among the guests were old friends of the senior Jankolas, Mr. and Mrs. John Ceeil of ‘Trail, who, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January of this year. Entertainment “hnring the evening included guitar presen- tation by two ‘grandsons, Matthew Gallo and Bill Jankola, with Rudy Baff on the organ, ‘Their daughter Ann Gallo sang a solo while son-in-law Steve Gallo and son Steve Jankola each did a reading, The church choir was also in attendance. A banquet followed at the Hi Arrow Arms, with their wedding cake bearing the top layer from their 50th wedding anniversary cake, A reception was later held at the Home of Mr: and Mrs. Steve Gallo, When it. was ‘suggested that the couple may one day celebrate their 76th wedding anniversary, | Mrs, Jankola smiled and ‘Its hard to make it to 60.” Rendina Hamiltom, a Penticton school trustee and’ practising lawyer, has been elected 1976- ‘Tl president of the British Columbia Schoo!
