A portable device which permits people with hearing and speech impairments to use telephones anywhere will be available from B.C. Tel starting,in May. The device, known as a Visual Ear, enables people with such impairments to travel freely and still keep in touch with friends and rel- atives by using a telephone. At present, teletype- writers or other similar equipment can be connected‘ to a telephone so that the phone can be used by the hard-of-hearing and those with speech impairments, but such use is limited to that one specially-equipped in- strument. - ‘The Visual Ear, how- ever, is compact and light: weight so that it can be carried gasily and is very simple to use with most telephones, The unit consists of a keyboard, a message display and an acoustic coupler. To place a call, the user merely dials the telephone number, puts the telephone handset in the Visual Ear's acoustic coupler and types a message on the keyboard. In this way, those using 7 the instrument will be able to: - communicate with anyone else having a Visual Ear, a teletypewriter or other sim- ilar device. Visual Ear is being made available by telephone com- panies across Canada, includ- ing B.C. Tel.
