cs _Casthagar News _ orc, BUSINESS Pe iia 4 Bi at ie By CALVIN WOODWARD Canadian Press FREEPORT, ME. — It's darker than dark along the coast of Maine near midnight on a wintry Sunday night. But at L.L. Bean, the lights are shining, a cash register chatters and hardy shoppers crunch through the newfallen snow. The famous Maine outfitter “threw away the keys” 35 years ago and has only closed twice since — when John F. Kennedy was assassinated and when Bean himself died in 1967 at age 94. Bea: is said, decided to keep the doors open when he got tired of people waking him up in the middle of the night to buy a pair of his Maine hunting shoes. Much of Bean's folksy legacy remains, despite the Harvard expertise and computerized efficiency that have transformed the back rooms where old clerks used to trade hunting yarns as they shuffled about filling orders. The company has grown ‘rom a modest maker of leather-topped, rubber-bottomed shoes in 1912 to a retail and mail-order enterprise with sales of about $3 million in 1965, $30 million in 1975 and over $300 million in 1985. TRY CANADA L.L. Bean has recently completed its first distribution of catalogues to Canada, taking advantage of new Canadian customs rules phased in last year to expedite mail-order deliveries. Mail orders from the United States are now delivered to the home after Canada Customs attaches a bill for duty, if any. No duty is charged for an order under $40 Cdn. Previously, such parcels had to be picked up at centres and the duty paid there. L.L. Bean employs 1,850 people full time in its manufacturing centre, shipping warehouse and only store and it distributes 75 million catalogues a year. More than two million people visit the store each year in Freeport, a southern Maine town of 6,000. Amid its bustle, the company prides itself on its kayaking clinics, on having helped a caller from California name his dog, and on having refunded $2.85 plus tax to a customer whose boomerang never came back. It uses employees as models for its faintly archaic Ignoring the vagaries of fashion, its executives declare “function, function, function” is the bottom line in everything from the cedar-stuffed dog beds to the goose-down comforters and buffalo plaid shirts. The image is of old-time country storekeeper who knows his solid, no-frills merchandise inside out and trusts his customers without limits. Can this be for real? Well, the packs of dehydrated quiche and orange mandarin chicken do signal concessions to those who prefer gourmet to gruel on the camping trail. And the average customers these days are no longer professional outdoorsmen, but men and women of high education, above-average income and a fondness for outdoor recreation, the company says. “Almost in spite of itself, Bean gear has attained chic,” the fashi Quarterly concluded, praising the “unforced pean al its goods. But behind the scenes, hands-on management means gtting hands dirty. Top executives hike, hunt, kayak or climb, and each year they embark on a rugged excursion more than 60 kilometres long, into the nearby White Mountains. New products —-from collapsible snowshoes to underwear — are tested on all outings. Canada looks EDMONTON (CP) — From the cafes of small-town Saskatchewan to the corporate boardrooms of Calgary there's a new look to the latest wave of business investors. They come from Hong Kong. Through the early 1980s, the British colony has been overtaking Germany as the favorite place for Canadian governments and private business to round up fresh money. The biggest coup so far has been Nova Corp.'s deal to have Li Ka-Shing take over 43 per cent of Husky Oil Ltd. of Calgary. Nova chairman Bob Blair announced the agreement in December. Li's Union Faith Ltd., with more than $6 billion in assets, is to buy out minority shareholders and spend $359 million for part of Nova’s share in Husky. The deal wipes $200 million in Husky debt off Nova's books. It injects $359 million into Nova, a Calgary-based chemical, pipeline and manufacturing conglomerate. It commits Union Faith to putting up another $1 billion for Husky investments in the next four years. Other Hong Kong business owners are expected to conclude that Alberta must have something going for it if can attract Li, whose business empire was expected to make more than $900 million in after-tax profits in. 1986., Last November, the Hongkong Bank of Canada agreed to spend $63.5 million to buy the faltering Bank of British Columbia. The bank is a 'y of and Shanghai Banking Corp., one of the world’s largest banks with assets of about $108_billion. The Bank of B.C. deal gave the Hongkong Bank of Canada 30 new outlets in B.C., and one each in Calgary and Edmonton. More humble plans have sometimes gone astray. The Saskatchewan government has had to rethink its dream of transplanting entrepreneurs from Hong Kong to Prairie towns. “We have pretty well quit dealing with them,” said Randy Chambers, chairman of the economic development committee in the central Saskatchewan town of Watrous, population 1,830. Three years ago, Watrous was waiting for the Hong Kong investors who had bought a children's wear store, two cafes and land for a dry-cleaning plant. “Some of them never even showed up,” Chambers said in a telephone interview. “They just sent us a Christmas card from Vancouver.” Most of ‘the immigrants sold their Watrous holdings after settling in Vancouver or Toronto. One family settled in Watrous but moved to Toronto two years later. All the businesses are still there, with local owners. Preeceville, Sask., population 1,300, wasn’t a strong enough magnet either. Two families from Hong Kong had moved in by 1984 to open a restaurant and a clothing store. Others were to Hong Kong expected to arrive and set up a tire shop, car wash and auto dealership. “I think they all ended up moving to Toronto,” said Russell Peet, president of the local economic development committee. Hong Kong has become Alberta's largest overseas source of investment money and entrepreneurial immigra- tion, said Bruce McDonald, director of the Calgary Economic Development Authority. “Most of the Hong Kong investors we've spoken to are looking for a stable economy, a stable place politically,” McDonald said. Jim Wright, Edmonton's director of economic develop- ment, said the city is stepping up the presence in Hong Kong. Edmonton set up displays in the Hanover trade show in West Germany for the last three years “and we haven't got anything out of it so we're not going back there,” Wright said. But civic representatives will probably go to Hong Kong after a trip to northern China this April, he said. “If we aren't going there we are losing by default.” In Regina, Don Jesse, director of economic developm- ent, said $20 million of a proposed $25-million Chinatown development in the city could come from ihvestors in Hong Kong. Some of the appeal in Western Canada is the presence of an established Chinese population. Chinese restaurants and other service industries run by Chinese immigrants or their descendants are as common on the Prairies as junior hockey teams. McDonald said about 40,000 of Calgary's more than 650,000 residents are of Chinese descent.
