I didn’t do Jesse, That’s the Way It Should Be ‘and Haven't Got Time for the Pain.” About the live album, she said: “My favorites are songs that never really got exposure and I wanted to give \a second life, like Never Been Gone, which is my favorite song on the album, and I Happens Every Day. “It's funny how certain songs that: I've written I always thought were terrific songs but they were never picked up~from-albums as“ singles or they were on * albums that were flops or they were never recorded properly. “I think It Happens Every Day is such a neat song, compact, concise, emotional. It was on Hello Big Man, an album I did for Warner Brothers, which was never particularly popular. “I think it’s one of my best albums. It was at a tir Warner Brothers was thinking of sending me to Siberia. I don't think they invested a whole lot in promoting that album, They wanted me to do more things that were contemporary.” The curse of the recording industry, she said, is radio's top 40 playlists. KILLS MOTIVATION “It kills your artistic motivation,” she s: credited Arista Records president Clive Davis for helping to keep her going. “You really can’t sell albums in record stores that don’t have some outlet on radio. Clive says, ‘You have to be yourself but you also have to give me something that I can sell to radio.” ” Carly Simon became Mrs. Jim Hart on‘Dee. 23. The couple met ona train in upstate New York in May 1987. “He was an insurance salesman. He said saying that got rid of a lot of people at cocktail parties,” she said. “He riveted me, I was just fascinated. It didn't matter what he did. I'd never out with a manwho had a straight job before. I'm used to artists and musicians. “He thought I was one of those female singers but he wasn't sure which one. He wasn't into popular music y at all.” In September, the couple returns to Manhattan, where her son, Ben, will go to school. Daughter Sarah will go to a boarding school in Massachusetts. Both children are from her marriage to singer-songwriter James Taylor. Hart has an 11-year-old son who lives in Ithaca, N.Y., with his mother and stepfather. » October 5, 1988 Castlegar News al NEW OFFICERS . . . President-elect for 1988-89 is John Thompson while Colin Philli Gordon Shead is secretary and Len Darnbrough is treasurer. Directors are Brian Brown, Rob Dunlap, Jim Ford, Dale Johanson and Andre Dreyfuss By BOB THOMAS Associated Press LOS ANGELES — Richard Drey. fuss has this fantasy about his opening remarks at the press confer. ence to announce his candidacy for U.S. senator from California: “T want to tell you right off that: 1. I am a Jew; 2. I am a recovering alcoholic; 3. I was arrested on nar. cotie charges; 4. I have been in therapy. Now gimme a break!” No, Dreyfuss is not prepared to declare his candidacy yet — maybe in the next century. “By that time I'll be 53 years old, and I'll probably be giving up acting,” he said. “I've always had two major interests in my life outside of acting. One is politics, the other is teaching. So if I don’t go into polities, I'll prob- ably become a teacher.” There's little chance of a change of profession right away. Not with his film career once again at a peak after near-extinction. The Dreyfuss story — AIR CONDITIONED WESTAR & COMINCO VOUCHERS ACCEPTED D-sar-D DINING LOUNGE OPEN 4 P.M. His lowest point was the day after he was arrested. “I told my wife, ‘Well, it's over. I guess I'll have to find something else to do,” he said. It happened in October 1982. Driving down Benedict Canyon, he lost control of his Mercedes-Benz and crashed into a palm tree, flipping the car over. Police found two vials of cocaine and 31 tablets of the narcotic Percodan in the car. The drug bust almost sank a career that had already been foundering HAD FLOPS “IT had nothing but flops for four years,” he admitted. “It's pretty hard to rise above something like that.” His mishaps included The Big Fix, The Competition, Whose Life Is It Anyway? and The Buddy System. On the last film, his behavior seemed erratic, and word circulated that Richard Dreyfuss was a bad risk “That might have been the end, except that Paul Mazursky happened to see me in a play in New York, Total Abandon,” said Dreyfuss. “He insisted on casting me in Down and Out in Beverly Hills.” The comedy proved a hit for Dis. ney's Touchstone Pictures, and Drey. fuss appeared in two more successes for the company, The Tin Men and Stakeout. His new film is Moon Over Parador, reuniting him with Paul Mazursky. In the Universal Pictures movie, Dreyfuss plays a hustling New York actor forced to impersonate a re- cently deceased Latin American dic. tator. It is a tour de force for him, made under rugged conditions in the historic Brazilian cities of Ouro Preto and Salvador de Bahia. rebounds. Dreyfuss makes no claims to a “lost childhood.” “During all that time I was a son, a brother, a student, as well as an actor,” he said. “I had a fairly normal boyhood.” He lasted only a year at San Fernando Valley State College be- fore pursuing a career in earnest. In 1973, he attracted notice as Baby Face Nelson in Dillinger, then he joined the now-legendary cast of American Graffiti. Two other block busters of the 1970s followed: Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The climax of the Dreyfuss career came with the Academy Award he received as best actor for The Good- bye Girl. Then he began the downhill race, accelerated by bad decisions, alcohol and drugs. Understandably, Dreyfuss is weary of reliving his downfall for reporters. “Recently I ran into Barbara Walters, who asked to interview me for her show,” he said. “I told her, ‘Look, Barbara, there is only one Richard Dreyfuss story at the moment, and I have already told that story. Until there is another Richard Dreyfuss story, I'd rather wait.” You know what she said? ‘I have to agree with you.’ ” Cable 10 TV SHAW CABLE 10TV Oct. 5, 7 and 9 5:30 p.m. [Wed] 9 a.m. [Fri] 1 p.m. Officers installed A Bavarian supper in the Oktoberfest tradition highlight- ed the annual installation of officers of the Castlegar Kiwanis Club Tuesday night at Jenny's Cafe. New president Jack Hipwell said Kiwanis “will continue growing and being of service to the community” in the 12 months ahead. He said the club will be tackling new projects and hinted that should the aquatic centre referendum be successful, the club will make a major com- mitment to that undertaking. Nuclear mishaps _ ("oon kept secret | WASHINGTON (AP) — Serious mishaps over 28 years at a U. government plant in South Carolina that prodiices materials for nuclear weapons were kept secret for national-security reasons and not re- ported to Washington, federal offi- cials said Tuesday. “There has always been a mind set, a culture, that we are doing work that is important for national secur. ity and perhaps that may override any obligation toward public account- ability,” Will Callicott, a spokesman for the Energy Department, said Tuesday. E.1. du Pont Nemours and Co, runs the Savannah River facility under contract for the Energy Department. The plant, which has five reactors, produces plutonium and tritium, which are used in making nuclear weapons. A 1985 memorandum said 30 “r: actor incidents of the greatest sig- nificance" occurred there and were not disclosed to the public. One of the most serious was the melting in November 1970 of a rod used to start an atomic chain re- action, causing radioactive contamin ation of an adjacent room. It took 900 people three months to clean up the contamination, said the memo, which does not specify, whether radioac- tivity escaped from the facility.
