Willowhaven resident Elmore Calbick is treated to a massage of his hands by Christine Sutherland, an instructor for the Canadian Institute of Palliative Massage. “The Power of Touch” will be offered at the Rosemont campus of Selkirk College this July. I felt totally stir crazy,” Says the palliative care worker. “My spirit was free and I was in this dead: And I realized how inappropriate any building is for someone in a wheelchair,” said Ziskind. Ziskind’s 24-hour stay in a wheelchair was part of an inten- sive seven day course offered by the Canadian Institute of Palliative Massage in Nelson last summer. ‘My work won't be done until everyone can get a massage a day.’ — CHRISTINE SUTHERLAND Massage therapy instructor “The Power of Touch” will be ‘ FOUNSRRIION FOR AFFORD@SLE HOVSING HomMEsS BC CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST The Provincial Government's HOMES BC program provides housing options for low and moderate income 3ritish Columbians. It is open to medical profes- sionals, artists, aestheticians, hos- pice volunteers, homecare attend: and family who want to relieve the pain of their loved ones, says instructor Christine Sutherland. “The course is all hands-on,” she says. “It is designed to ease the pain of the chronically ill, the disabled and the terminally ill. You don't need to be a profes- sional to help those in need.” Nelson resident Barb Cowen learned'this important lesson from Sutherland when her close friend was dying of AIDS. “I just couldn't believe how important massage became,” says Cowen who was part of a team of caregivers. “I felt able to keep his muscles loose. Otherwise he would have become rigid, which increases the pain factor.” Cowen says the power of touch works both ways. “It made me feel helpless. It gives yau a sense of purpose and a way to connect with the person that is quite special.” Adds Ziskind: “Family mem- bers who care about loved ones worry about what they can do, what they can give. Just rubbing feet, hands, neck is so wonderful. It’s such a relief and something anyone can do.” Sutherland is looking for home placements for her students, who come from as far away as Van- couver. It is the only course of its kind in the province. “We'd be happy to massage anyone who is chronically ill, disabled or terminally ill at their home,” says Sutherland. “We will also offer a one-hour evening course at Willowhaven July 12 for family members to learn sim- ple massage.” Anyone interested in enrolling in the course or volunteering for massage can reach Sutherland at 352-7755. “My work won't be done until everyone can get a massage a day,” says Sutherland, who admits she has a vested interest in her work. “I want a better acces- sibility to massage by the time it's my turn to need it. This is credit in the bank.” [aut BUbY Complete Body & Paint Facilities Auto Glass Replacement Towing 2316 - 6th Ave., Castlegar 365-5114 WE'VE MOVED Crafts & Wedding Supplies Favors our specialty See us in our new location in the Castle Theatre building P just Ev's Coco.ate & Girt Suop 185 Columbia Avenue | * Interior/Exterior * Commercial/Residential />* 15 Yrs.
