Trail Times- Friday, December 3, 1982 - 7 wilt lll'ry p.... It was rather unfortunate that two events held in Rossland this past weekend had to clash but it happened and one of them had to suffer. For the past five or six years the Canadian Legion Branch No. 14 has held a Grey Cup breakfast. It has always been quite a drawing card for · football-minded members and their guests. Held in the downstairs banquet room, the early morning meal consists of bacon, eggs, pancakes and sausage and of course the inevitable coffee. It is attended by the male members of the branch and it has often seen as many as 80 guests assembled for the big game which is watched on two TVs supplied by a dealermember free of charge. This time around however, the attendance was limited to less than 35 as there was a mixed bonspiel held in the arena with draws starting at 9 a.m. This one-day event is also quite popular with local people since the resurgence of the mixed game in Rossland. We have been assured however that this will not happen again. We have been told that a date prior to the big football extravaganza has already been booked for next season. We must remember, however, that next year's Grey Cup will be played in British Columbia's magnificent new domed stadium in downtown Vancouver and I have heard that some fans from this area are already contacting friends and-or relatives at the coast to get tickets. On behalf of those who enjoyed the breakfast and the game I would like to thank those who helped me in the kitchen, Jim Brown, Toby Ed worthy, Herb Castle, Angus Popplewell, John McFarland Jr., Jack Hook, Charlie Cholak and Chuck Harkness who along with organizers Carl Osing and Joe Thalman did a helluva job, also we must thank Jim Dunlop for the sets which I understand perfomed real well, and Ralph Berry and Joe Gyte for the table setup arrangements. . Yes, I was one who signed up for the bonspiel when it was organized and I managed a 10:30 draw so that I could help with the breakfast. It was a good day, each rink played three sixend games and the rinks of Jim Schuck and Mike Kraftchick came out winners in the "A" and "B" events. Jim had Helen Blackie as third, Frank Harris, second and Harry Douglas was his lead to take the "A" with 16 points while Mike and Nellie Moll at third, Bernie Ferrey, second and his lead was Edile Habicht. Mike garnered 17 points to take the "B". Points were awarded thusly: one for each end won and two for a victory. I played with Ivan "the Terrible" Bell and after a rather shaky start we managed 11 points in the "B" side, we opened against Angus Popplewaell's rink, then beat Gil Besso and wound up giving Mike Kraftchick a tough battle before losing to the ultimate winner of the "B". Ivan and I had Cindy Bateman at third and Ev Pengelly as lead. Jack McDonald and his wife Eileen along with Jim and Phil Bateman were the organizers and the Eagles Ladies supplied the bar and concession help. The organizers got help from Steve and Brenda and Cindy as ticket takers. Steve, John and Bob cooked the· steaks and Dave Smith arranged the prizes. There was plenty of time between games for everyone to get together and socialize which is what makes these one-day 'spiels so popular. I talked to Jack Malchow on Wednesday regarding the money 'spiel they had planned for this coming weekend. He told me those plans went awry when the lack of out-of-town rinks entered forced a post- ponement. Jack says they may try to do something in the form of a mixed. From a standpoint of the Retirees I think something like this would be welcome, quite a lot of the old boys took part in Sunday's event. The Retirees club is winding down their first competition. It will end either Thursday or carry over until next Tuesday. Angus Popplewell's rink looks like the team to beat. When it's over we will redraw the rinks and go into another round. Despite three ·games over the weekend, the Warriors failed to break the drought they have been suffering, a heartbreaking loss to the division-leading Smokies 5-4 in overtime started another round of losses, a 6-1 loss to the Nite ·Hawks in a game they were never really in and then another close one that saw the Rebels score four goals in the third to take an 8-4 win in Castlegar on Tuesday night.
