Miss Castlegar and prin- eess Cindy Harnadek have just returned from three fun-filled days at Nanaimo. The occassion was their participation in the Bathtub Races for which Nanaimo {s so famous. On Friday, the girls at- tended a smorgasbord at the Hotel Malaspina where they stayed and were visited by the town’s notorious but loved “Pirate’ Mayor Frank Ney. SStiowing dimer, engi proceeded to “King Neptuni Ball” to see the crowning of the new “King Neptune” and to hear his first royal decrees, After participating in part) of the dance, the girls left just in time to see the “sacrifice” (a ritual that is supposed to bring good weather for the races) and a beautiful display of fireworks all along the shore. Off to an early , start Saturday morning, the girls participated in the land parade followed by a ride in a gigantic bathtub to Newcastle Island where they enjoyed lunch and further boating. In the afternoon they watched the visiting Mayor's Race with sabotage being done to the bathtub boat of the lady mayor of Parksville, leaving the mayor of Williams Lake wide ‘open to win. Unexpectedly, Castlegar's royalty found’ themselves a'so participants in the day's events when they took part in the queens and princesses peddle bathtub races. ~ On Sunday morning the girls were able to watch the start of the famour Bathtub Races which included part- icipants from Australia, the United States and of course from all over Canada, Prior to the Nanaimo trip, - icipated in the three-day events of Salmo Days, then. on to Nelson for it’s parade and pageant ‘and. the crowning of Sharon Mann as the new Miss Nelson.
