His name is Mike E. Murphy and he is — among other things — a special projects engineer, a world traveller, a trustee for training workers in Alberta, a member of the Science Foundation Board, a former student of Stanley Humphries secondary school and Selkirk College, and the No. 1 booster for his hometown and what it has to offer its ambitious young people. After graduating from SHSS in 1966, Mike continued his education, first at Selkirk College, and then at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He joined the Bird ‘The Soviets area show-me people’ Construction Co. as a purchasing agent and \started to move ‘upwards in a series of steps to become a special projects engineer. This, he defined as one who specializes in projects which fall outside the scope of general contracting and which entail a higher than normal degree of difficulty or risk. When we met he had just completed a pair of such projects for Expo. One of these was an Indian exhibits motif for the Canada pavilion, and the second — and much larger — was for the Soviet pavilion, the largest exhibit on the Expo site. Negotiations for the contract, for which the was responsible, were long and complex, and took six months to The jon of pavili is different from regular contract jobs, he said. It involves rapid construction, special materials and an extensive ledge of and i “It is the show biz side of the building trades since its function is display. Moreover, time schedules are usually close and completion time rigid — in the case of the Soviet building, May 1,” he said. This meant great pressure for everyone involved. When, at the end of March the Canadian workers had completed the construction of the building, the Soviets arrived on April 1 with 120 technicians plus interpeters to install 500 cases — each six-feet by six-feet by eight-feet — of displays. One of these displays alone, a statue of the first cosmonaut, Yuri Gargarin,; was 30-feet high. “How did you get along with these Soviets?” I asked. “Superbly.” he said. “The Soviets had sent over their very best technicians and I was proud when our Canadians kept up with them throughout the entire job. Reflections & recollections ‘They are a ‘show-me’ people, but when they saw how hard we were working, within a few days we were working in total harmony and understanding. “The women interpreters,” he continued, “had a bit of trouble at first, particularly with some of the technical jargon. However, the interaction between the Canadian and Russian technicians soon became so close that the interpreters were scarcely needed. “My opposite number, the chief Soviet architect would talk in a mixture of broken English, a little Russian, sign language, and, knowing a little of what we wanted, we got along fine.” “The Soviets,” he said, “are very safety conscious. When they arrived we issued everyone with safety helmets. Since, however, most of the dangerous work was over, it was understood that they would only be worn in potentially dangerous areas but left off at other times. “The Russians used them all the time, we didn't. One day the Soviet architect took me aside and said, ‘Would you please wear your safety hat. It sets a good example. Besides, we need you for the rest of the job.’ ” Mike chuckled at the recollection, then added: “But he was right.” “What,” I wanted to know, “made things go so well for you.” “We were both skilled professional teams,” Mike explained, “and that set a foundation of mutual respect. We were both working against that absolute deadline of May 2, and that made cooperation essential. Then there was the acceptance of cultural and political differences. And finally, the fact that we were all human, prone to error and unable to know everything, all imperfect.” The interpreters, for example, sometimes became embarrassed and frustrated and both Canadian and Russian technicians would pat them on the shoulder and BUILDING EXPO . . - Former Castlegar resident font os « pulpwood or heavy-duty limbing saw Boih v0 fend up in cold, icy conditions os well os hot, dry climates.
