vate investigator to become
an actress.

Scott Valentine plays Nick,
Mallory's monosyllabic boy-
friend on Family Ties.

He was hit by a truck in
New York City six years ago
and has an artificial hip that
leaves him with a slight limp.
He's already shot a pilot for a
possible spinoff from Family
Ties.

‘Arthur and Valentine are
among those taken-for-grant-
ed players who populate the
background on popular net-

The ad was for a detective
agency that specialized in
missing persons. The owner
of the agency liked to hire
actresses for undercover
work.

Quilt
show
planned

The Grand Forks Quilt
Connection will sponsor a
quilt show July 31, Aug. 1
and 2. Approximately 150
quilts, wall-hangings,
cushions and quilted clothing
from Kootenay and Okan-
agan quilters will be on dis
play.

To carry out the Heritage
theme of Grand Forks that
weekend the display will in
clude restored horse-drawn
implements such as buggies,
mowers and rakes. There will
also be a quilt shop vendor
and two guest quilters from
Nelson to demonstrate and
talk about their specialties of
contemporary and applique
quilts.

“Quilt Classic I” will be
held in the Co-op Building in
downtown Grand Forks.

NEW YORK (REUTER) — Muscleman-turned-
actor Arnold Schwarzenegger says being a movie star is a
lot like being a politician — and he will not disappoint his
public.

So the Austrian-born box-office sensation makes it
point to sign autographs, to acknowledge a “Hi, Arnold,”
and to flash his famous gap-toothed smile at secretaries
who giggle at him across office corridors.

“You always have to think of your fans,” said the
deeply tanned, cigar-puffing Schwarzenegger, in town to
promote his new movie, Predator.

“Being an actor is very much like being a politician.
You have to be doing what they want you to do, rather
than what you want to do. Or else there will be only three
people standing outside the theatre,” he said.

“I give them every time exactly what they expect,
what they want, which is the action-adventure, comedy.

Schwarzenegger plays Dutch Shaefer, a professional
soldier. On a rescue mission in a Latin American jungle,
Shaefer and his band of musclemen commandos
encounter a monster from outer space — a predator who
hunts, skins, and disembowels its captives.

One by one, Schwarzenegger's men fall victim
Finally only our hero is left — near-naked, weaponless
and mud-covered — to confront the monster one-on-one.
As one critic quipped: “Guess who wins?”

“It’s gonna be big,” Schwarzenegger, 37, said. “From
the results we've gotten back, it’s going to be much
bigger than Terminator.” The 1984 film was his biggest
box office draw to date. .

Predator made for fans

Schwarzenegger's dramatic debut came in the 1976
movie Stay Hungry, and the actor, who parlayed body
building into a multi-million-dollar movie career, a star on
Hollywood Boulevard, a booming real estate business and
marriage to Maria Shriver, a member of the Kennedy
family, says he takes the advice of that title to heart.

“I was an after-war baby,” Schwarzenegger said. “I
grew up where there was nothing around. A person who
grows up like I did will always work hard, always be
hungry for more, and always will have a philosophy of
staying hungry.”

“If you can become like a machine, without ever
having to think about it, and win, then you know this
formula works and you can apply it to another area,” he
said.

The six-foot, two-inch, seven-time winner of the Mr.
Olympia title says body building, which he still works at,
though not competitively, taught him the discipline he
needed to reach his goals.

“You do your four hours’ training, take your sun,
spend another hour posing. Most actors don’t have this
discipline. The first success they get, they go crazy. They
spend the money, or take drugs,” he said.

In Predator Schwarzenegger has to share the screen,
at least temporarily, with five other “hunks,” including
ex-pro football player Carl Weathers (who played Apollo
Creed in the Rocky movies) and former heavyweight
wrestling champion Jessie Ventura.

“Those guys were crazy at first,” says Schwarzen
egger. “IfI trained an hour a day, then they said, ‘Well, I
sheuld train two, because then I'll look twice as good as
he does.’ Then I trained two and they trained three.”

Private companies
cut insurance

KAMLOOPS (CP) — Pri-
vate companies are cutting
liability insurance premiums
for municipalities in half in
the wake of a plan by the
Union of B.C. Municipalities
to set up its own insurance

m.

The provincial government
also passed legislation re-
cently reducing the liability
of municipalities.

The union won the support
of local politicians earlier this
year with a proposal to set up
a municipal insurance pool to
avoid the need for coverage
under private insurance com-
panies.

The union's proposal was
the result of premium in-
creases of up to 400 per cent
in 1985.

Union executive director
Richard Taylor said that
cities are finding their pre-
miums now are being cut 50
to 60 per cent by private in-
surers.

College eyes former
Pentecostal church

Selkirk College may be interested in using the old
Pentecostal Tabernacle church on 11th Avenue, Ald. Nick
Oglow said this week.

Oglow, chairman of the planning and development
committee, told a public hearing Tuesday that the college
is one of several “options” new owner Leo Bosse of M and
B Holdings Ltd. is considering for the former church
building.

Oglow made the comments at a public hearing into
Bosse’s application to rezone the church property from
Schools, Institutional and Public to Comprehensive
Commercial.

Only one resident turned out for the hearing, which
lasted less than 15 minutes.

Bud Godderis, representing the Kootenay Columbia
Child Care Society, which operates the Hobbit Hill Child
Care Centre adjacent to the old church, expressed
sevedral concerns about the rezoning.

“What effect would this have on the Hobbit Hill
Centre which is right next door?” Godderis asked.

Couneil suggested Godderis examine the list of
permitted yses under the Comprehensive Commercial
zoning. Those uses include theatre and TV studios, an
amusement centre, offices, food sales, restaurants, retail
and sales, hotel/motel and motor inns.

“We don’t have a specific request for a use at this
time,” Oglow said.

Mayor Audrey Moore pointed out that the hearing is
intended to receive input from the public.

Godderis also said he is concerned about possible
noise from the church building and asked if council has
made any provision for that.

“I would have to assume there would be more noise
than when it operated as a church on Sunday,” Moore
replied.

Ald. Len Embree noted that the city has a noise
bylaw in place. As well, Embree said he doesn’t see a
problem with rezoning the property, though he hasn't
seen possible uses.

Godderis also mentioned possible parking problems,
but Moore said the owners will -have to comply with
regulations governing parking.

Council approved the rezoning.

not agree to join the union's
plan.

Kamloops treasurer
Wayen Ridgway said he was
waiting for estimates from
the city’s insurance brokers.

The city now pays $250,000
for a $1-million primary lia-
bility policy plus a $5-million
excess liability policy. The
policy carries a $265,000-
deductible clause.

In 1984, the city paid
$65,000 for about $11 million
in total coverage. The follow-
ing year premiums jumped to
$270,000.

Hillyerd M. York, husband
of Eva York of Castlegar,
passed away Wednesday,
July 22 at the age of 77.

Funeral service was held
Saturday at the Castlegar
Funeral Chapel with Mr. Val

Mr. York was born Aug.
24, 1909 at Wimborne, Alta.
He grew up in Alberta and
later moved to Invermere
and worked as a guide in both

the Banff and Jasper areas of
Alberta. In his early years he
enjoyed following the rodeo
circuit.

In 1937 he married Eva
Ann Bartle at Cranbrook. It
was also in 1937 that he
moved to Fruitvale and be-
gan working for Cominco.
From 1941 to 1943 he oper-
ated a dairy farm.

He returned to Cominco to
work as a welder in 1943 and
retired in 1974. In 1947 he
moved to Kinnaird where he
