UK diplomat
spends day

in Castlegar

Britain's chief diplomat to
British Columbia and the
Yukon spent some time in
Castlegar Wednesday, at the
tail end of a 16-montb tour of
the area.

ver and Victoria and famili-
arize himself with his res.
ponsibilities, “spoke to a
Castlegar city council lunch

“My job is to strengthen
ties, for a true and, I hope, a

“I realize that it's rather
unfashionable to remind you
of the link between Britain
and Canada,” Watkins said,
adding Canada has inherited
many of Britain's good

of the top trading partners
with the United Kingdom.

“I don't think there is any
danger-of you concentrating
entirely on the United
States,” he said in referring
to the Canada-U.S. free-trade
agreement.

forestry, fishing and agricul

The woman who married
Spokane’s South Hill rapist
says she “was conned” and
wants a divorce.

Shawn ‘O'Brian, 27, says
she believes Kevin Coe is
guilty of raping three wom
en.

But she says she married
the rapist in a prison cere.
mony 20 months ago because
he promised her wealth and
fame.

“I was conned,” O'Brian
said. “I'm just going to end
up being as big a loser as he
is, and that’s what he is.

“I'm sorry about that,
that’s the way he is.”

Coe, 41, was convicted in
1985 of three counts of first-
degree rape and sentenced to
life plus 55 years in prison.

The state Supreme Court,
however, has since reversed
two rape convictions, throw-
ing out testimony by victims
whom investigators had hyp-
notized.

The third conviction was
upheld because the victim
was not hypnotized.

Coe could now be eligible
for release within four years.
