the railways can abandon up to four

scrap haven't been used much in
recent years. But communities and
provincial governments are reluc-
tant to see them go because of their

little-used lines to cut costs and
become more competitive with
trucks. A major expense for the rail-
ways is maintaining tracks.

Bouchard said the railways have
been allowed to decide which lines
they want taken out of service.

Fans flock to Dean home

FAIRMOUNT, IND. (REUTER)
On Main Street, friends still call him
Jimmy, the boy who did chorus on
the farm before Hollywood made him
a star.

To the fans who still flock here,
James Dean was an icon of American
youth who still lives 33 years after
his death.

“To me, Jimmy Dean was just a
good, down-home Hoosier farm boy,”
said town historian. Harry Warr.
“Some of the things they write about
him make me grit my teeth.”

Fascination with Dean, who died at
age 24 in a car crash on Sept. 30,
1955, temains so strong that every
year thousands come to this small
Indiana farm town that was his
home. The town's James Dean Days,
held this year on Sept. 24-25, draw
20,000 people a year.

His gravestone has been stolen
several times and pieces of it are

chipped off
fans,

“I think it's just unbelievable that
the guy brings in so many people
from all over the world,” said Bob
Roth, who used to play basketball
with Dean, who would have been
57 now.

the same flag: Scallen’s International
Broadcasting Corp.

Scallen’s company purchased the
Hollywood, Calif.-based Globetrot
ters and Ice Capades for $30 million
US in December 1986 from Metro-
media Inc.

Signing Manley to the Ice Capades’
fall tour is one of many moves the
former public defender, banker and
motion picture executive has made to
revitalize the skating troupe.

He has also added a second squad
to the Globetrotters and hired female
players Sandra Hodge, Nancy Lie
berman and Joyce Walker to draw
more women to the games.

What's more, Scallen recently ac
quired the Boblo Island amusement
park near Detroit for $19.5 million.
He says the island in the lower
Detroit River will generate cash flow
in the summer when the Globetrot
ters and Ice Capades are idle.

FINDS MODEL

“What we are a mini-Walt Disney,”
said the 62-year-old Scallen. “We
want to expand within the concept of
quality family entertainment.”

Besides the Ice Capades, Globe.
trotters and Boblo Island, Scallen's
company owns a controlling interest
in Century Park Pictures, a Holly-
wood production company that made
the movie Shoot to Kill, starting
Sidney Poitier and Tom Berenger.

A second film, South of Picasso, is
in the works and will feature
Tom Hanks.

Scallen also has his eyes on
regional amusement parks and tele.

So far, Scallen has tranformed
International Broadcasting from an
obscure penny stock company, which
lost $1.2 million on sales of $2 million
in 1986, toa $34 million company that
expects to post net earnings this year
of more than $2 million.

International Broadcasting stock
now trades in the range of $10 a
share-—on—the—-national—over-the=
counter market.

The business seems to fit Scallen's
colorful past.

There was the law degree from the
University of Denver that allowed
him to work in that city as a public
defender before returning to his
hometown of Minneapolis, where he
acquired his love of skating. He said
he returned to Minnesota to join a
law firm in which his father was a
partner.

CHANGES CAREER

From there he turned to a banking
career, starting the Bank of Minne.
apolis and helping to finance Joe
Robbie's purchase.of the Miami Dol
phins professional football team.

He quit to launch his show busi.
ness career that eventually had him
running Shipsteads and Johnson Ice
Follies, Holiday on Ice, and the
Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus. He
also worked briefly in a top executive
post at 20th Century Fox.

His darting moves through the
entertainment world were briefly
derailed in the early 1980s when
Scallen ran afoul of Canadian secur.
ities laws.

He was convicted — but later par.
doned — for distributing a false
prospectus on a loan he arranged to
help finance his acquisition of the
Vancouver Canucks of the National
Hockey League.

way he looked and acted — just very
casual,” said David Loehr. “He
looked like the kind of guy everyone
would have wanted for a friend.

Loehr, 38, who lives in New York,
has collected James Dean memor-
abilia since 1974 when he read a book
about him and saw East of Eden.

He has opened the James Dean
Gallery in Fairmount to display his
collection of posters, photographs,
clothing Dean wore in his movies, a

plaster life mask and hundreds of
other items,
PAYS TRIBUTE

The Fairmount Historical Museum
also pays tribute to the town's most
famous son. It has a room with
Dean's high school basketball and
road race trophies, letter sweaters
and his Czechoslovakian motorcycle.

At the Fairmount Family Res.
taurant Bob Pulley, 57, talked about
his friend “Jimmy.”

“He was an ordinary, all-round
kid,” said Pulley, a high school cla:
mate of Dean, “A little mischevious.

Pulley last saw Dean when be
visited Fairmount in February 1955.

“We got together and we partied
— he hadn't changed a bit,” Pulley
said. “We had a good time that
night.”

At a bar in nearby Marion, Pulley
said, Dean filled his mouth with
lighter fluid, then sprayed the fluid
through a lit match, sending a fire
ball sailing through the air.

A Fairmount man who was in the
bar asked Dean for his autograph,
then tore it up in front of the actor.

“T'll bet that guy wishes he had it
today,” Pulley said.
