i Golden City Days areĀ·over for another year and they seem to grow better with age. I'm certain that the crowd that watched the parade on Saturday morning was the most densely packed crowd I've seen in Rossland for such an occasion. It was my first time to ride in a vehicle pulling a float in Rossland and I must say you certainly get a different view of the crowd from UP, front. A driver has to really watch closely as the little ones crowd up close to the line of march to grab the goodies being dispensed by the clowns, pop vendors, et al. What with soccer games, softball games, races for grown-ups and the kiddies, it certainly is a full weekend for any sports lovers. For those who enjoy other pursuits like art, gardening, etc., there is also a full quota, not to mention dances of all descriptions from the big Fireman's Ball down to the street dance and those at the clubs; beer drinkers had a field day with many outlets open to them. It seemed every place one went it was the same, crowded. We took in the RLOP perfonnance this year and it was well worth the small entry fee for a couple of hours of really fine entertainment performed by strictly local people. The little recitations done by Eve Bourchier were, for me, the real gems of the evening. I'd heard them before, way back when, but_ never any better done. Also winding down the G.C.D. report, the host team at the soccer tourney, Rossland Retreads, captured the silver in their tourney, behind Trail Crown Point who beat them in the final game 3-1. The Terra Nova team beat the Warfield Converters in the slo-pitch tourney held during the same weekend. Ten teams were entered and Terra Nova won all its games. Turning now to the hockey front, I was told on Sunday that the Rossland Minor Hockey Association registration fonns for the youngsters are now in the schools apd can also be picked up at the Recreation Office at the Arena. Now to Warrior news. I attended a meeting of the club at the Arena on Tuesday evening and learned the following, Bob Whitlock, former pro hcokey player and a member of the Smoke Eaters at one time, and most recently the coach of Trail Midgets, will take over the coaching job, replacing long-time encumbent Lloyd McLellan. He will be backed by an executive consisting of Gerry Racicot as manager and exec members Darryl Wallis, Bill Proflli, Vince Profili, Adrian Van der Zalm, Gary Holm and Tony Topolinski Assistant manager will be Barb Armour and Marilyn Davis will be sec.treasurer. Jim Schuck will be in charge of minor officials, Dave Adams will oversee bar operations and Neil Murdoch will be the Warrior Rep to the KIJHL. The club will hold a garage sale in the Curling Rink on Sept. ?.8, shortly before the curling ice goes in. Anyone with articles to give to the club for this fund-raising effort should contact ~meone on the executive for pick-up or where to deliver to. All in all, I would have to say that I get the impression that this executive has an idea what they are faced with and are more than willing to do something constructive about it. To golf for awhile; Tuesday we were up against the weather outlook, and the Ladies of Birchbank entertaining the Retirees. The first didn't turn out too bad but the second kept our numbers to less than half our usual turnout. However, we did give away three balls, one went to Jim Scott for his 16 Honey Pot points, Joe Rosse took one for a hidden number on No. 9, he won in a draw over Bart Dudley and Noland Garrison. In the hidden number on No. 7 I was successful in a coin toss with Al Turner. Thursday we trekked over to Christina Lake and I'll have any tid-bits from that trip next week. Til next time, then! -~--""""'::""""."'---====~~~~~
