Great weather was never
more appreciated than it
was last weekend.
Rosslanders and their many
visitors basked in the sunshine and enjoyed every
minute of our annual
celebration.
IT would be pretty hard to
pick out a highlight of our
Golden City Days. The
parade was outstanding,
with floats and novelties
galore, but so were the
exhibits that filled the arena,
art, garden and kitchen
products and the many
entered by the local
businesses.

Everywhere one went
there were crowds. There
were. people on the streets,
more of them crowded the
various bars, saloons,
lounges and Bavarian
gardens, meeting old friends
and generally living it up.
On the sports side of the
show were the bike races, ·a
rapidly growing sport in
Rossland, thanks mainlf to
the efforts of Dave Butler
and his I associates. The
Golden City grind, a
gruelling race attracted 66

runners.

There was rugby for the
first time this year, a new

game to a lot of Rossland
people but it did draw some
support as did the sl<rpitch
ball tourney.
One of the outstanding
highlights were the hanggliders. The picture of these
young daredevils doing their
thing against a backdrop of
the clear blue sky was really
something to be remembered for a long time.
The Terry Fox run drew
its share of supporters and
while on this subject I would
like to salute two Rossland
girls, Donna Price and
Heather Watkinson, who
earned $530 for the cause by
completing their running
assignment in respectable
times. Heather made it in
89.08 minutes while Donna
completed hers in 89.59.
Good going, girls!
Golden City Days always
produces its share of
humorous incidents. Once
such was related to me by
Davy Tweed, it concerned an
incident which happened at
the Golden Nugget Saloon
Saturday evening. Our
famous group of dancing

waiters, Jim Albo, Bill
Profili, Vince Profili, Mark
Martin, Maurice Samuelson,
Joe Ranallo, Ron Holm and
Bryan Stevenson, decided to
change the format and dress
two of their members as
original can-can girls. All
went well until some of the
boys' apparel started to slip
and become quite revealing,
giving the watchers added
reason to applaud the
group's always grand
performance.
The Diamond Dust
Bavarian Garden, complete
with a group of musicians
from Kelowna and headed
by Rossland's own artistmusician, Jimmy Scott, was
a definite success. Memb·ers of Local 480 were
responsible for this effort
and many of the union's
members put in many long
hours at various tasks
preparing and operating this
segment of Rossland's
celebration.
The committee responsible for the whole show are
to be congratulated for a
marvellous job, well performed at every turn.

From Glyn Harper comes
news of the golf tournament
held at the upper course this
past Saturday, some 65
golfers, some from Kimberley,, Cranbrook, Spokane
and Nelson, took part along
with the local boys in the
Rossland Warrior Oldtimers-Labatts tourney
under ideal conditions.
Over-all winner was
Murray Gordon with a gross
72 followed by Gerry Barre
of Kimberley with an 80 and
Howie Palmer with 82, low
net honors went to Gerry
Bond of Cranbrook with a 69,
Bobby Seaman followed with
a 70 and Ray St. Jean with
71.

Glyn tells me they expect
to set the tourney up or back
a week next year to avoid
conflict with Golden City
Days and the !Joyd Cup
playoffs.
This week's action in
retirees' golf at the upper
course was once more under
sunny skies. More than 30
played their rounds and with
their favorite five clubs and
putter and there were some
good scores. Jim Scott won a
ball for a long putt on no. 9,
Chuck Sankey also sank a
long one on this hole but
since his total of putts was
the lowest, 13, we gave Jim

the ball for the long putt,
Cleve Cowland won the
hidden hole and Jack
Buchanan and Bud Comba
won low gross honors with
identical 42's.
. Each week we move closer
to tl,e inevitable end of the
golf season, we hope tn get in
at least a couple more
rounds before the dead leaf
situation gets too bad, next
week's program will be run
by Phil Bateman and
someone yet to~ named.
Well, the Canada Cup has
passed into history and the
Russians went home with all
the marbles. They almost
got away with Allan
Eagleson's trophy too,
anyway, they proved they
have what it takes in• that
final game and were full
value for their victory.
Canada needed a big lead in
that first period but Tretiak
was too hot for them while at
the other end Mike Liut
looked almost shaky at
times.
The format for the Canada
Cup is for the birds: Call it
sour grapes or whatever, but
I say why a playoff at all, one
team is good enough to win
in single games against
every other team, why give
the others a second chance. I
say "Phooey"!
