Both Grand Forks. and Kootenay youth participated in this event. Upon arrival at the scene, we were shocked to find that the memorial sheaf of wheat erected at the spot where he died (the sheaf being remnants-of the tomb which was blown up at Brilliant a number” of years” back)’ was shattered and smeared with Ted paint. In addition, the ground and some rocks were also painted red and various plaques were erected at the scene. These plaques accused the USCC of being communist agents of the U.S.S.R, and. included other false accusations. ‘The basic reaction of the youth that saw this, was one of shock. In addition, we found that many rocks along the highway’ near the vicinity of Paulson Bridge between Grand Forks and Castlegar were defaced by paint, also falsely accusing us of being communist agents and the Brilliant Cultural Centre as being the base for “KGB”. The Brilliant Cultural Centre is an honest effort by the members of the Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ to fill the need for such a centre in the Kootenay area, for various cultural activities throughout the year. The same hate propaganda is evidenced in the various hate literature which we receive or we hear of that is being dis- tributed by someone. Again, we say that the accusations are false. The destruction of the Castlegar-Robson memorial, and the hate litera- ture are deplorable acts of misguided people. We have witnessed and experienced such violence and propaganda directed against us during our life in Canada, namely almost 77 years. During this time, we have seen much of our property destroyed and our people subjected to the mental strains accompanying these events for three-quarters of a century. If such acts are claimed under the Doukhobor name, we wish to state that terrorism and violence or any act of hate— verbal, written or physical, are Should Not Restrict ‘Log and Chip Exports The Royal Commission re- ‘port on forest resources says encoyraging domestic secon- dary manufacturing by re- stricting exports of logs and chips reflects a misunder- standing of the full impact of such policies on the provinelal economy. Control of exports of forest products is shared between the federal and provincial govern: ments with Ottawa having con- stitutional jurisdiction over in- ternational trade and the pro- vince having authority over natural resources. Both governments restrict exports of logs, pulp chips and other mill residuals, to promote domestic manufacturing. “I do not mean to imply that manufacturing in the pro- vince should not be encour- aged,” says commissioner Dr. Peter Pearse, a University of British Columbia economist. » “However, I am gravely con- cerned that an attempt to do this by restricting the market for intermediate products which are themselves the pro- ducts of domestic industry is misdirected and contrary to a relax export restrictions by re- moving some of their arbitrary and inequitable features, ‘He says {éderal and pro- vinelal export permits are too cumbersome and proposes in- creased reliance on the export levy. “The timber tax affords a * flexible and consistent device for providing whatever degree ‘of protection to domestic manu- facturers the government con- sliders desirable, and enables the Crown to appropriate some of the gains from export privileges," the report says, Dr. Pearse proposes that the permit system no longer be used to ration exports and that the timber tax be modified to give sufficient price protection to domestic manufacturing to prevent serious disruption in their raw material supplies, He says this could be'done through changing the timber tax from fixed dollar levies toa single percentage rate ‘for logs and another for chips. The per- mit system would be retained for the immediate future but fe constructive strat- egy.” In his report released last Wednesday, Dr. Pearse says that because any sudden re- moval of export controls would cause problems’ for some com- panies, he proposed to partly Youths not a part of the Doukhobor beliefs. These acts are the com- plete opposite of the aims of our faith. Our religion, which is based on Christian teachings, for permits would be modified so they no longer serve a restric tive function. Ottawa would be asked to adopt complementary policies. a CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, November 25, 1976 . a Sincere Thanks .. .
