CASTLEGAR NEWS, Friday, Novomber 12, 1976 By Pastor Donald W. Reed # This Sunday “¢ has been designa- Y ted Strange then: that’ the appeal of the Right to Life Association found a responsive ear. Perhaps it was the start- ling statistic that abortions in B.C. are nearing 30 per 100 live + .births, giving us the ‘rather this and that “worthy” cause. If I chose to, I could espouse one most every Sunday of the year. There's United Nation's Sun- day, Bible Society’ Sunday, Save the Animals Sunday, to name just a-few. ‘ To be perfectly honest, such appeals usually find their, way into my clreular file. 1 simply am not willing to interrupt my preaching pat- terns for the sake of every organization that wants to use my pulpit as a platform to peddle its propaganda. Whea Death Comes of boasting the’ highest rate in "Canada. Let's tell it like it is: in 1974, 48,186 Canadians were killed by legal abortion. The total number of Canadians who J died in World War II was about 40,000, In the United States, over 2,000,000 babies are abort- ved per year. George F.- Will, writing in a September “News- week”, estimates 60 million legal abortions per year world- wide. “The killing of fetuses on scale,” he says, “is a Religious Orientation Assists in Adjustment When someone dies in “a” family, what do you say or do to help the sorrowing? What is least helpful? These questions led David Haun of Cushing, Okla, to study three aspects of bereave- ment and the funeral exper- ience for his research toward a doctorate degree. Mr. Haun’s findings show- ed the things said to the bereaved that were most help- ful were good memories about the deceased and values in his or her life that were appre- ciated. “Also mentioned as helpful were religious comments on the strengths of the deceased or the help of God in the be Teaved's own life,” said Mr. Haun, a minister of the Chris- tian Disciples of Christ. “Many times people say, ‘I am afraid I'm going to say the ‘wrong thing’ or I don't know - what to ‘say.’ “And people coming in after the death seemed almost afraid to men- tion the name of the deceased, |. “But if'you know some- thing good, say it, -because the sorrowing want to ventilate their hurts.” The bereaved tended to -say.the people they remem- bered most favorably were those who came quickly when they heard of the death, Most of the bereaved said they had a difficult time adjust- ing to the death experience. Those losing a child tended to have a more serious adjust- ment difficulty than those los- ing any other relative, includ- ing a mate, The bereaved with a high- er level of religious orien- tation reported easier adjust- sment to the death experience, revolution against the judg- ment of generations.” Our world is facing an ‘abortion epidemic and many of 5 us are alarmed. Abortion has become simply a method of birth control and it is all justified on the grounds that every woman has the right to control her body. But is abor- tion merely the “termination” ofa hamburger in the stomach? Is the fetus simply a mere part of a woman's body? : that the child’s life is not the mother’s life but a separate, individual life. And the child has as much right to this'life as the mother has to hers or as any human beings have to theirs, Dr. Bernard Nathanson, after 18 months as adminis- trator of the busiest abortion facility in the western world, stated that he had presided over 60,000 deaths, not 60,000 abortions. i Pearl Buck, Nobel Prize winner, writes, “Since the fetus Medical science recognizes . iP Dee DI ee eR OE Advertising Rates and Information Call 365-5210 C. At what: point shall we allow this choice? For me the answer is. ...at no point, once life has begun.” Our Canadian Bill of Rights says it: well, “It is hereby recognized and declared that in Canada there bas existed and shall continue to exist without discrimination... the following human rights, namely, the right to life, liberty,’ security of the person and enjoyment of prop- erty.” This right to life is the most fundamental right of every human person. To violate it, to destroy a life—whether in the womb or out of it—is a crime against society, against man and against God. ‘This year I'm stuffing the turkey, not myself!
