When did Jack Paar and Johnny Carson, both famous hosts of The Tonight Show, first meet? Less than three months ago, on Feb. 23 to be precise, in Burbank, Calif., during the filming of the three-hour special which will be shown Monday night. “Jack Paar came in,” Parks recalls. “Johnny Carson happened to be stadning there. He stuck his hand out and said, ‘We've never met. We ought to take care of that.’ ” Steve Allen was the first host of The Tonight Show, from 1953 to 1957. Paar took over until 1962, when Carson came on the scene. Parks. who appeared frequently on the old Kraft Television Theatre, didn't write a spot for herself among the more than 100 performers appearing on the special! For one thing, none of the 12 or 15 shows she was on exists any more. “They kept wonderful records of what they did,” she says. “What they didn’t keep was actual footage in many cases. “Nobody had an archival sense in this business til about 10 years ago. Everybody wag so busy creating the industry, nobody thought about preserving it. Now nobody throws anything away.” Before she started writing, Parks devised the theme. She'd have tours through the network's studios in New York and Burbank featuring the children from The Cosby Show When the tour begins, the littlest “Cosby” child, Keshia Knight Pulliam, has a bag of nuts because she NBC celebrates thinks there will be peacocks. The elevator doors open, revealing dancers gowned as peacocks. The big opening number takes them all over New York's RCA Building. At one point, in Burbank, Barbara Eden of I Dream of Jeannie and Nell Carter of Gimme a Break talk about family sitcoms. Then they're joined by Soleil Moon Frye of Punky Brewster; Maria Gibbs, 227; Charlotte Rae, The Facts of Life; Alfonso Ribeiro, Silver Spoons, and Bea Arthur, Golden Girls. They launch into a musical number, We Are a Family. Do viewers still want anniversary shows? “It'll be interesting to find out,” Parks says. “I worked in what has come to be known as the Golden Age of TV,” Parks says. “You could work in both TV and theatre. With the advent of tape and motion-picture stars deciding they would test the waters in this new medium, TV moved to California. “I was on a long-running soap, ‘Love of Life.’ The star had a real hold on great moral values. They gave her a roommate, me, who had a less firm hold. She was apt to go off with boys, which soap opera heroines did not do. “You could be in at 8:15 in the morning and out the door at 12. You could do theatre. You might be a little short on sleep.” It helped that Parks had acted at NBC, she says. “I had two young men helping with research. I'd say, ‘Go look for this. It was done about such and such a year. 1 know because I was there.’ In pursuit of it, they would turn up other things. It was a nice amalgam of what intrigued a 20-year-old mind and somebody in her 50s who was there.” Dance Co. stil NEW YORK (AP) — Mar. tha Graham, whose modern dance company gave its first performance on April 18, 1926, doesn’t remember dates very well. “I have too long a time to ." she said in her HI ARROW BEER & WINE STORE Open Every Day Til Christmas Eve STARTING MAY 15 HOURS: MONDAY - SATURDAY, 9 A.M. - 11 P.M. (AP) — For a one-stop vacation in the United States, it's hard to do better than the Seattle area, a new vacation guide pub lished by Rand MeNally and Co. says. Although the Seattle Mount Rainier-North Cas. cade area ranked no higher than third in any of the six categories used to compare various vacation spots, it earned the best all-around score in the book Vacation Places Rated “The Seattle area offers the most variety from lakes to mountains, from enter tainment to restaurants, with both indoor and outdoor rec reation,” said Rand McNally spokesman Joyce Hodel. Filling out the top five vacation destinations are Los Angeles, Hawaii, the Miami Gold Coast-Keys area of Florida, and San Francisco. Boston rated sixth, while New York City, despite rank. ing first in three of the six categories, tied with Chicago and the Denver-Rocky Moun ains area of Colorado for seventh place. The Tampa Bay-Southwest Coast area of Florida finished No. 10. The guide rated 107 areas across the United States. Five states — Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska and North Dakota — had no vac ation destinations on the list. TWO-YEAR STUDY The book is the result of a two-year effort by former Rand McNally senior editor Sylvia McNair. Skokie-based Rand MeNally, the world’s largest travel-guide publish er and commercial map- maker, also publishes the an nual Places Rated Almanac, which ranks U.S. cities for quality of life. The six categories by which the areas were ranked were: — Blessings of Nature, with the Redwoods-Mount Shasta-Mount Lassen area of northern California awarded the top spot. — Basic Necessities, with New York in first place Feeding The Mind and Spirit, won by New York Entertainment for All, won by New York VIRIBIA HAM ema STUFFED PORK TENDERLOIN 4... ..... $10.95 CRAB LEGS nem vn $10.95 SN oan ial end salted bor, ° porsley potatoes. 49.95 and the specials at the Monte Carlo!
