The trees aren't the only thing special about the evening that begins with a gourmet dinner prepared by students in the college’s professional cooking program under the super- vision of Merle Mearz, cooking in- structor. The banquet, which includes wine and after-dinner aperitifs, will be ser- ved by students in other tourism department programs. During the meal, festival-goers will be serenaded by the college's professional music Program faculty. In addition to the trees, which will be auctioned off after the dinner, an array of hand-crafted Christmas gifts will be on display and open to bids at a silent auction. Tickets for the gala evening are $40 per person. Business and civic groups or clubs are encouraged to organize tables of eight by Nov. 12 to ensure group seating. Because the Festival of Trees is a charitible event, half the ticket price is tax deductible. In Nelson, tickets are available from Exner and Dietrich chartered accountants. In Castlegar, contact Marg Poohachoff at Selkirk College or Ald. Marilyn Mathieson for tickets. In Trail, contact Jean Cor- mak and in Grand Forks contact Holtby. at the college there. As they are completed, the trees will be displayed at local business in many communities across the region. The Festival of Trees is a concept that was staged quite successfully in Edmonton, said Holtby, who is sure that Nelson hasn’t seen anything like this event. If all goes well, it should prove to be a shot in the arm for the college foundation in its efforts to assist students attend college. SERVING BRITISH COLUMBIA SINCE 1969. hem Environmental assessments stopped VANCOUVER (CP) — Environ- ment Ministry officials in northern British Columbia were ordered to stop assessing the environmental im- pact of everything from logging to pesticides this spring and summer, say two internal ministry memos. Two directives — copies of which were obtained by the Vancouver Sun — told officials where to make cuts in ministry reviews of logging plans, pesticide permits, power lines, pipelines, placer mining and oil and gas developments. Both memos blame inadequate staff levels and an ever-increasing workload for cuts in the Skeena and northern Interior regions. “‘We cannot continue to take on greater workloads and watch the quality and effectiveness of ‘everything we do suffer by similiar in- crements,’’ said of the memos, signed by D.L. Zirul, northern Interior fish and wildlife manager. Environment Minister John Reynolds said there have been no budget cuts in his ministry’s habitat management programs this year. He released a ministry statement which says: ‘Managers are by definition required to priorize staff time and resources. These memos reflect ongoing decisions.’’ John Cashore, the NDP’s en- vironment critic, criticized Reynold’s response. The ‘minister doesn’t recognize there are times environmental concer- ns don’t coincide with this gover- nment’s fiscal plan, Cashore said. The Environment Ministry statement said, however, that the government has advertised openings for the equivalent of 2% full-time habitat protection jobs in the nor- thern region and is considering can- didates. “*These are included in a total of 22 additional positions with $1,421,000 funding allocated to all ministry FRDA talks continue PRINCE GEORGE (CP) — The federal government may consider other options if it and the B.C. gover- nmeht can’t agree on a second phase of the Forest Resource Development Agreement by the end of the year, Frank Oberle, minister of state for forests, said. The first phase of the agreement expired this spring after the reforestation of more than 60,000 hectares in the northeast quarter of the province. Both levels of government each contributed $150 million to reforestation during the agreement's five-year term. Now, the federal government is of- fering $100 million as its portion of the agreement. “That is what I have to work with for B.C.,"’ said Oberle, who is also the MP for Prince George-Peace River. Oberle said he had no progress to report in negotiations. “I wish I could say that, but I can’t, except that this issue has to be resolved before the end of the year or I'll have to look at other options,"’ he said. programs in the two northern regions in 1990,’’ the statement says.
