While the installation of new machinery tas presented a very plausible excuse for partially closing the War Eagle and Centre Star mines, the fact that the Hall mines and smelter have closed because of labor uncertainties resulting from the eight-hour law, leads one to be- lieve that the Mine Owners Associa- tion have taken unlooked for, though’ decidedly effective measures to checkmate an element of agitators in the Miners’ union. Nobody will dispute that, under proper condi- tions, the eight-hour law presents much to commend itself, but the Recorp believes that these condi- tions do dot at present exist in this section, and that a country which is only partially developed does not watrant the concessions which the law demands. More than this, the manner in which it was placed upon the statute books, without the knowledge of those most deeply in- terested, was without any consider- ation of fairness whatever. It was not demanded by the miners, who, as we all know, were apparently well satisfied with their lot. The lop of the K » the prosperity of the people and the progress of’ the country were hailed with delight and general content prevailed everywhere until political boosters and a few labor agitators upset it all, and did it in such a way that not only were the mine owners denied an opportunity to present their side of the case, but half the miners themselves had no know- ledge of sucha law, until.it had been placed upon the statute books. The Mine Owners association have appealed to the legislature to repeal | ° the law, and the miners’ unions have followed this appeal with peti- tions praying that the legislature let it stand. The sum and substance of it is, that, in their petition, the miners stated, in so many words, that they would'strike if the law were re- pealed. Evidently the mine own- ers have taken the matter in hand with the intention of making a strike unnecessary.: At any rate, five or six hundred men are’ out of em- [ DUE cial ruin.
