CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, October 23, 1975 to the Editor Sa Culfure fs First Concern Dear Sir: My interest Is often stirred by clippings from the Castlegar News which are sent to me. ‘Thia ‘time I'am more than intereated—I am also con- cerned! T see in an article from your issue of Aug. 21 that John Holden has returned to the thankful I did graduate before he came. Thope his attitudes are misrepresented in the article because I think the people of School District No. 8—Engllsh, Italian, Indian, Doukhobor, Portuguese—Canadians all —deserve a superintendent better awareness of ural da great: district to becom dent of schools, The reporting of his comments’ and the attitudes displayed by him leave in me a deep sadness and some dispalr at the thought of his controlling a school district containing many diverse and beautiful cultural heritages, Tam saddened because his comments about his exper- iences in the Yukon point toa man who fs insensitive and, apparently, intolerant of cul- tural differences and who does not consider a willingness to share a valuable trait. On the contrary, your article indicates that he views sharing as cheating. Consider his comment, quoted as a criticism: “the tative children had little con- ceptof time and they arrived at. school in their own good time.” + He misses the point that the native culture has a differ. ent concept of time than does our Western industrial culture —a concept much more closely allgned to the natural forces of the earth and the person's own body. To the extent that the education system should be set up to suit its constituents, where was the attempt by Mr. Holden to adjust the school rather than the children? Or were his comments just badly repor! ‘The last two paragraphs of the article give me the im- pression that John Holden ts criticizing the students for thelr er valuation of the richness to be found in cultural diversity and in sharing, Jim Macbeth Murdoch University Western Australia se Sa yes!
