She worked in the child care field in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia for seven years, then as a social worker in both acute and chronic care wards in the Vancouver General and Universi- ty Hospitals in Vancouver. In Castlegar, she worked for the Ministry of Social Services as a Child Protection Officer before joining Community services in April 1994. Nichol gets much satisfaction from her work, and particularly enjoys the variety of people and she encounters. In the brief time she has worked in her new position, she has counselled men and women, children, adoles- cents, and elderly persons, ranging in age from six to 82 years. She counsels both individuals and cou- ples, including same-sex partners. Funds raised go toward lung disease research, health education and Programs. The Castlegar trekker was among 262 cyclists aged 16- 69 from all over B.C.. They road at their own pace along scenic country roads in the Fraser Valley and northwest- ern Washington state. Inside the complex, the Old Time Fiddlers were providing some toe-tappin’ old favorites and the Kootenay Country Wester Dancers kicked up their heels. After all that music, fun and food, some serious bingo took place, sponsored by the Castlegar and District Legion. It was a busy day, but a successful one financially for the United Way. Now, the organization is sending canvassers throughout the community to continue fundraising on its behalf. All money donated to the United Way helps local char- ities and organizations who, would struggle to survive from year to year.
