The Stanley Humphries secon- dary school tennis team travelled the Okanagan in search of com- petition last weekend and, despite playing thtee different schools, really didn’t find a whole lot of it. Except for a eight-match tie with Vernon secondary school on Friday, SHSS cruised through the weekend with a pair of 9-2 wins over Summerland secondary and Clarence Fulton, another Vernon school. It was the first competition of the season for SHSS, which is the only West Kootenah high school that went with a tennis program this year, and coach Barry DePaoli was raving about his team veterans and the new kids on the block. “Our girls teams, especially our doubles teams — Carilyn Briscoe and Trish Merriman, and Amanda Romney and (Argentine éxchange student) Maite Bilbao — didn’t lose a match all weekend,”’ said Depaoli. DePaoli was also impressed with the play of rookie Amanda Fayant and his No: 1 boys singles player, Klaus Rentsch another exchange student. As for the veterans, the pair of Clint Dolgopol and David Green played their usual sdlid games, losing once in five matches, said DePaoli. “*1 would say this is one of the stronger teams this school has had. We don’t have any dominant players, but probably our strongest point is balance. We don’t have any weak spots.’’ Now if only they could find some teams in the area to play, said DePaoli. The team travels to Kimberley this Saturday and will play in an invitational provincial-like tour- nament May 31 to June 2 in Kamloops. GOLF Todd Bondaroff shot a team low 82 on the par-72 Castlegar course Monday as the SHSS golf team won its second high school tournament in three outings this year. The win gave SHSS the right to hold the West Kootenay cham- pionships May 10 on its home course. Bondaroff’s score was the third lowest overall in the eight-school tournament. Jody Carew and Todd Ar- CLINT DOLGOPOL . solid, as usual chambault both shot 83s and Klaus Rentsch shot 84. Mark Perrier and Chris Chernenkoff had 90 and 93 respectively as all six SHSS golfers were in the top 20 lowest scores. Castlegar completed the season with two first-place finishes and a second. The same three schools which have topped the standings in all three tournaments to date were again on top Monday as Trail’s J.L. Crowe secondary finished second overall and L.V. Rogers of Nelson was third. Those three schools will meet in the’ West Kootenay champion- ship with the top two advancing to the East-West Kootenay finals May 17 in Creston. The lowest score of the tour- nament was 79 shot by a J.L, Crowe golfer. Teams from Mount Sentinel in South Slocan, Nakusp, Trafalgar secondary of Nelson, Rossland and Salmo also played in the tourney. SHSS. hosts a Can/Am tour- nament this weekend with teams from Spokane, Colville and Coeur ‘d'Alene. LVR and J.L. Crowe will also play in that tour- ney. BASKETBALL Kristy Lees, a Grade 12 star on SHSS’s provincial bronze medalist senior girls basketball team, has accepted a basketball scholarship at Cariboo College. 4 TORONTO (CP) — Quarterback Matt Dunigan’s eyes lit up like an child on Christmas Day SPRING PRE-OWNED OAT SA LE many extras 8 Mercruiser siern drive, full convos 22 1976 Kac SOFT) TOP ir OLYMPIC RUNABOUT With 1975 65 HP Mercury outboard ond trailer im 19745 FIBERFORM HP Johnson ‘outboard, trailer 1 7 sk SKAGIT With 115 HP Evinrude outboard, trailer 17' GLASPAR Ne OR nn, wate, comes NOTES sore sence etna, eter, fl even ie FIBERFORM 05 HP Mercury outboard, troiler, full convos is HOURSTON HP Mercury outboard, power 1s STARCRAFT ‘oiler 15st STARCRAFT st STARCRAFT ith 50 HP Mercury outboard, trailer 1 ANCHOR ith 65 HP Mercury outboard, trailer SANAVENTU RE outboard, troiler Syringa Park Marina Call Sid at 365-5472 THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING Roadside screening devices .are in the hands of police officers across the province. The Notre Dame star will carn a minimum of $18 million US, but could make up to $26 million with individual and team bonuses. But the money was only part of the reason the Rocket headed north. Respect was the other part. “When I had meetings with whoever (in the NFL), it was like they were doing me a favor,” Ismail said of negotiating with the Patriots, who had the first draft pick, and Cowboys, who traded for it. “*My initial feeling was like | was being treated like an immature child instead of a young man."’ He found the treatment he wanted from McNall. “The attitude of the people in- volved was the key and I feel that if the attitude is good then that’s where I wanted to go.”’ Dunigan said Ismail should make his job easier. ‘‘He’s the final piece of the puzzle.”’ Last year, when Ismail was daz- zling crowds with the Fighting Irish, Rob Case was turning aside shots from every angble the Argo offence was on a record- setting pace.
