PAGE 4° CASTLE NEWS, Castlegar, British Columbia THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 1952 COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN , APPOINTED MONDAY \ Water bill for M. Plotnikoff . of $11.00 cancelled. Water had been ‘turned off so that he only received water from the city for, one month. This was duly pald. Investigation as to future use: Is to follow. & Report was accepted as to the double taxation on the Fomenoff property. One piece of land had two buildings on it and over'a period of years had: been thought to be two separate parcels of Jand and taxed accordingly. In- vestigation proved only one, and one tax was cancelled. A. Horswill was instructed to purchase dog tags for the com- ing year.” Price of these tags has been raised and the com- missioners are seriously consid- ing the raising of licence fees for dogs as the dog population . Seems to be getting quite out of hand in Castlegar. The Dog by- law is being studied by B. Cherrington with an ‘eye to stricter enforcement. Building Inspector, D. Seaton, who has been working on a temporary basis tha last six, months now has his inspection appointment confirmed and will continue to act in this capacity. A letter was received from the Trans Canada Southern Route signed by J. H. Bracken calling attention to a meeting in-the board room in Nelson for Janu- ary 14th beginning at 10:00 a.m. to-discuss future plans for com- pletion of the road. V. Jenks was named representative from Castlegar — transportation will be provided. A letter from H. Anscomb to J. Dunlop was read regarding Castlegar’s share of taxes for one year. The amount being $12,300. Part has already been paid — balance to be received in June, 1952. N. Oglow stated he thought all the villages would protest the fact that the 3 per cent may be diverted solely to cairy educational costs and doubted that any would be able’ to survive on a smaller amount. Some controversy has arisen over amount of tradesmen's lic- enses for a small portion of 1951 and up to January 15th of this year. However, a bylaw states that six months is the least time for which a license can be taken and if justice is to be done all must conform. The Finance Committee report Zave accounts payable totaling $1,625.89 and was accepted. The building inspector will be asked to investigate the Zonailo apartment building. It had been reported as a fire hazard and would have to be changed. The Bank of Montreal has of- a 1 per cent “earning "on any monies “not ac- deposited by the Village Commission. A. T. Horswill sug- gested some put aside for this purpose and it was so moved. © The Bloomer Creek survey was again brought to light. Work on this still continues but it is doubtful that a satisfactory so- lution will be reached this year. Dr. Anderson will be notified to this effect. No new report on the Blue- berry Creek survey — which the Celgar Corp. and Commissioners have jointly undertaken. It was decided to advertise in the Castle News the fact that any complaints ‘to .dny- depart- ment of the Board of Comimis- sioners should be registered at~ the office during office hours and should be submitted in writing and properly signed. This news is reported in the De- cember issue of Canadian Avia- tion magazine, No official an- nouncement ,lizs yet been made. The two Comets, each valued at over $1,250,000, likely will be flown to Canada early in 1953. They represent the first foreign-government order and the first® military application of the world-beating jet transports, the magazine reports. Two Comets already are on order for Canadian Pacific Air- lines, to be delivered next Sep- tember for service on’ the com- pany’s South Pacific routes, Hon- olulu_ to Australia. Canadian \Aviation claims that negotiations for the two Can- adian government Comets were initiated during the visit of Rt. Hon. C. D. Howe to the United Kingdom last September. At the time, the minister of defence pro- duction enjoyed a 90-minute, 500- mile-an-hour flight in the four- jet aircraft and cruised at 40-, 000 feet altitude. The Comet I, the version om ered by Canada, has four Ghost jet engines, each pees - ing about 5,000 pounds thrust. A later version, the Comet I, will have Rolls-Royce Avons (6,500 pounds thrust) and longer range. The Comet is the world’s first Jet. airliner, and still the only type fully licensed for commer- cial operation.
