Charbonneau to make announcement Transportation and Highways Minister will be here Thursday, SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor Transportation and Highways Mini Art Charb will either the bridge or the ferry. Last February, Charbonneau ttend: in Rob: a g in be in Castlegar tomorrow to make an announcement—at the highway pullout just downstream from the old ferry ramp. A fax release arrived at Thé Castlegar Sun late Tuesday after- noon, stating that a press release would be held at 11 am. Thurs- day at the ferry ramp. Rossland-Trail MLA Ed Con- roy will accompany Charbon- neau when he makes his announcement. Conroy would not comment on the subject mat- ter of what the minister is going to announce. "I wouldn't want to second guess what the minister is going to say, but maybe this announce- ment could be the ition of explaining why the ferry linking Castlegar and Robson, removed by the Social Credit government, would not be returned to its for- mer location on the Columbia River by the NDP. also said the new government did not have enough money to build a bridge across the river, thereby alleviating traffic along Columbia Avenue. Castlegar Mayor Audrey Moore said she was also informed of Charbonneau's visit yesterday, and says she is anxious to hear what he will have to say. “What he's going to say, I have no idea—but I sure hope it's good news.” Charbonneau was in the West Kootenay less than a month ago to some of the problems we have in this area,” said Conroy. The union is currently examining the offer in detail, and will meet with WKP and mediator Don Cott again today. OTEU members have been off the job since July 20, when the Intemational Brotherhood of Elec- trical Workers went on strike. "If we did reach a tentative agreement, it would have to be voted on, and we'd still be respecting IBEW lines,” added Ss b B- ly Turbo Firecat in Canada during its stay at the Castlegar airport. SUN STAFF PHOTO / Jason Keenan CURB to nominate candidate for October by-election SHARLENE IMHOFF Sun Editor The Coalition Unaccepting Rash Bureaucracy (CURB) will be holding a meeting Thursday night to pick a candidate to run in the October by-election. The candidate could poten- tially replace Councillor Mari- lyn Mathieson, who has yet to Officially resign from city coun- cil, though has said she is relo- cating to Vancouver. The meeting will be held Thursday night in the banquet room af the Fireside Inn at 7 p.m. Mike O'Connor, president of CURB, said he is hoping that at least one person from the 150-phis bs ip of the izati will be willing to toss their hat in the ring of municipal politics. What first started out as a Political protest movement at the grassroots level, has devel- oped into an organization which is determined to hold a seat on city council. “We want to get elected,” said O'Connor. "We have some good, qualified people who believe in opening up city council and lis- tening to the people.” O'Connor says he will not be running as the candidate since he is still an American citizen and therefore is disqualified under the municipal act. He maintains he is attempting to feceive his Canadian papers, and has been doing so since last January. He does however, know who he would like to see replacing Marilyn Mathieson. "I'm going to nominate Walter Flux.” Flux, vice-president of CURB, is currently involved in a legal dispute with the City of Castlegar over water and sewer fees. O'Connor says he wants to see more than one candidate running in the by-election, and stated that just because a person is a member of CURB, doesn't mean they have to vote for a candidate from CURB. “No one is bound to vote as a block, we should all be voting as individuals, for who we think will do the best job.” After the nomination meeting Thursday night, O'Connor says that campaigning will most likely begin soon. “That is if there will really be a by-clection—she has to resign first.” Alberta w Sun Staff A Single vehicle accident dast Thursday night claimed the life of an Albetra woman.
