Sept. 30 & Oct. 1 - Castlegar Complex The group was made up of members of the Trail Track and Field Club as well as the J.L. Crowe Secondary track team and the combination proved potent as 13 of the 19 athletes returned with medals. Three of the athletes, Angela Binnie, Ian Sharp and Kalindi Sharpj are Castlegar residents. In total, the group returned home with a staggering 30 first- place finishes along with 16 sil- ver medals and 14 bronze. Those great results came against a field of over 400 athletes representing clubs from a variety of regions in the province includ- ing the dominant Lower Mainland and Okanagan Valley clubs. Even though Kamloops was in the midst of the same heat wave that struck the West Kootenay that weekend, the weather didn't seem to deter the athletes. The two-day meet featured several outstanding individual performances by local athletes including memorable results from a pair of 13-year-olds. Trail’s Trevor Prior took the honor of winning the most events as his neck was adorned with five gold medals along with one sil- ver. Prior posted first place results in the 200m, 80m hurdles, high Angela Binnie jump, long jump and 200m hur- dies. The only blip on his perfect weekend came when he finished second in the 100m. Not to be outdone, Castlegar’s Angela Binnie carried the girls’ colors by taking gold in three of her six events. Binnie placed first in long jump, high jump and 80m hurdles while gaining silver in triple jump and shot put. Her lone bronze came inthe 100m. The best event for Binnie was the high jump where she destroyed all her competition. “High jump has been my best event so far this year,” said Bin- The proven winner with several 22C Package includes: ¢ Standard passenger and driver's side air bags 3.3 litre V6 engine 4-speed automatic transmission * Air conditioning ° °20, SEE YOUR B.C. Binnie will be taking her high- flying act to Richmond this week- end for the B.C, Elementary Provincial Championship's where she will compete with 2,500 ath- letes. She will compete in six events but still maintains the high jump will be her best event As for the other Castlegar com- petitors, Kalindi Sharp returned with silver in the 300m hurdles and bronze in the 800m. Her brother, Lan, took first in the 800m and performed admirably in the pole vault where he was forced to compete in a higher age class. Throwing and Receiving— Spend some time each session on developing throwing form and well as arm strength ¢ skills—Practise all defensive skills used in a game on a regular basis. These include moving to the ball, fielding ground balls, and catching pop-ups. Batting Practice—Have players rotate through a series of stations. These could include hitting off a batting tee, soft toss, and “live” batting practice (with the coach pitching from a distance of 8 to 9 metres from the batter). Base running—Use races and replays to improve running tech- nique. Players should practise running from home to first, and from base to base.
