Submitted Interest will now be added to unpaid traffic fines under new legisla- tion introduced recently by the provincial government. A government report states there is currently $133 million in out- standing fines to the provincial government. Well over 90 per cent of those stem from traffic violation tickets, involving more than 500,000 drivers. Transportation and Highways Minister Jackie Pement hopes the interest charge will provide incentive for motorists to pay fines within the prescribed time. The introduction of interest is expected to double the voluntary payment rate to 5O per cent. Last month, Pement intrduced traffic safety initiatives, which include a provision to impound the vehicle of anyone caught driving without a valid driver's licence. This is particularly aimed at motorists who fail to renew their licence because of outstanding fines. ry Mountain Appliance Service call ONLY *20 Specializing In: Home-made For friendly service anytime call breads, pies & moref!
