It is that time of year when unharvested fruit and de- composing’ compost heaps leftover from summer gar- dens lure feeding black bears down from the hills for their pre-hibernation feast. And local conservation of- ficers advise that area resi- dents take a common sense approach if they see a bear on . or near their property. According to and each time the bear was shot. Only grizzly bears are re- located, Campbell said. “What we are trying to get across to people is that they'll have to deal with these prob- lems themselves, if a bear just walks across their prop- erty, it’s not a serious sit- uation. They can't expect us to come and answer the calls under those conditions,” he Fish and Wildlife-Branch pol- icy, nuisance bears will be shot if they are trapped be- cause there are too many of them in the area to warrant relocation. “We are running out of areas to release them,” said Wayne Campbell, a conser- vation officer based in Trail. A conservation officer will only respond to a bear call if there is serious property damage involved or a “life threatening situation.” Campbell said the Fish and Wildlife Branch. has been cutting back on its response to nuisance bear calls for the past three years because of strained budgets and a reor- ganization of priorities. In the past, Trail officers responded to between 60 and 100 calls a year. This year, they responded to between 12 and 16 calls in the Castle- gar, Trail and Salmo area, Meanwhile, Robson ‘ resi- dent Sharon Demke is doing just that. She has seen a black bear near her home at the Arrow Lakes Trailer court, but she won't call the conservation office unless it becomes a nuisance or threatens the lives of her neighbors or family. “As long as he comes at night there’s no problem, we've been keeping the dog on the loose,” Demke said, adding: “Until he poses a threat, we'll leave well enough alone.” The bear was drawn to the trailer court because of ap- ples left unharvested on trees in the area. Demke said that last week he came up as far as her bedroom window. “We've got one but we refuse to let them shoot him, after all, we're in his ter- ritory,” she said. NEED AN INCOME?
