Or maybe you will laugh, but it will be humorless laughter and you will probably slap your hand to your brow. Maybe you will throw the papér down to the floor and just shake-your head, Allright, 've warned you; * So T'll begin. It starts when James Strickland of Chicago got killed in a car accident in 1978, He was 44, he left behind a family. ft Would be Funny if it Weren't True: Aftermath of Insurance Squabble But Strickland isn't the story. He also left behind an insurance policy, and - that’s what this is all about. - The policy was for $45,500. It was'to be split three ways among his wife Valaria and two ‘sons, Richard, then 15,.and ‘David, then 11, But a problem’ came’ up. before the policy could be paid. A daughter by a previous marriage (now grown and mar- vied) charged fraud in the policy and said she should be Ge ears Some Interesting Ideas” On How to Save Water i ilie BR EEE bed” is o your new wi “the suggestions on a . list: ’ far-out ways to save, water Teco mienees by bderaael i Heinz VINEGAR 12811. oz. The amount of ‘water you save, of course, depends on how many cocktails you drink.” So the case went-to court. Mrs. Strickland got herself a lawyer, and also a lawyer to represent her two sons, It ‘would seem a simple enough matter to clear up. If the daughter had evidence of ‘fraud, she could present it. If “not, the case should be tossed. out. But Judge Donald O'Brien decided that there was another problem that should be taken care of first. He didn't think enough lawyers were involved. He wanted each of the sons to have a lawyer. Mrs, Strickland objected. She is no dummy. She knows. that the more lawyers there are, the faster money disap- pears. So she and her lawyer objgcted. the two little boys could not trust each other,.or their own mother. So he wanted them to have somebody they could oj feel levers he would pick for thet : Wasn't that thoughtful of him? . So he found lawyers for both boys. One of them was state representative Michael Madigan, a powerful South Side politician who is very close to the ‘family of Mayor Richard Daley. That just, shows what a small world, we live in. Anyway, the legal battle d began, No, not the battle over who gets the insurance money. That didn't come until years * later. The real battle. was over “whether the boys could have lawyers’ picked by Judge o: Brien. It finally wound up in athe state Supreme Court, where another group of judges—most of them former Chicago politi- cians—decided that the boys needed those lawyers.” ‘This took so long that the actual case wasn't settled until recently, ‘+> At last they got down to the question of who should get the insurance money. Here is how it stands as of now. Remember the widow and two sons-were each to receive $16,833 from the policy, e Mrs, Strickland wound up with $10,086'after her share of court costs and her legal fees. e Richard, the eldest son, ended up with $8,697. Actually. he was lucky, since he turned 18 during the case and got rid of his court-appointed lawyer. e And David? Well, that hasn't been decided yet, but it is possible that David will wind up not only broke, but'in debt. That's right. David's court- appointed lawyer has syb- mitted a bill-for $12,400. So, after paying his. share ier lef sotiple ‘of thousand ‘iar the’ hole.” It's remarkable when ‘you consider what he got for his money. Judge O'Brien said David ‘needed a lawyer to look out for his interests. The lawyer O'Brien picked ‘was so eager to look out for David's interest that he spent most’ of his time in this case presenting legal arguments as to why he should be permitted ito do so, Now, having won the fight | ‘to look out for David, he has submitted a bill that would wipe the kid out completely. If that’s what it's like having Lawyer Madigan | on ‘your .side, imagine what .it ,would be like if he was against! out Judge 0' ‘Brien must approve all’ fees. So maybe he will decide that Mr. Madigan should. get less.
