May this be a Blessed ‘Christmas, filled with His Pre- sence in the lives of all who seek Him. ‘ Rev. Dave Ball . Grand Forks Pentecostal Church As. Necessary To Man as His Daily Bread “Festivals are as necessary to man as his daily bread.” —By Joseph Gelineau Christmas is a religious | festival tracing its origin to the historical events recorded in the Gospels. Its significance may have been lost for many, but there are still those who ” find a real joy and celebration in remembering these simple, but dramatic events. The festival of Christmas ealls people from the ordinary to the special. It indicates the difference between the valley . and the mountain top and helps to provide that variety that is essential to a full life. Christmas is, perhaps, the - most popular festival in our society partly due to its placing in. the seasonal changes. It comes when the days are short and the nights long, when the weather makes it more difficult to move about, and there is a general feeling that life is lived in a low profile. The Christmas festivities produce the abundance of lights and color that make life warmer and provides for a-real relief from the .ordinary face of winter. How-dull life would be if there were no seasons, for it is the change and variety that gives a real sparkle to our world. Festivals are part of the history of any society. They provide a contact with the past and a hope for the future. They help to make sense out of our present time, to remind us that we owe much to others and that we too, may have something to give to future generations. - Festivals preserve valu- able things in our culture and their ritual gives a meaning to the mysterious. Life is still a mystery despite our vast amount of knowledge and in- formation, We think easily of Christ- mas as a period of holidays. Could we remember that ori- ginally these days were “holy days,” special times set apart to remind people that life is sacred and despite its troubles and difficulties aught to be lived out in joy and celebration.
