Blind man delivers baby

OTTAWA (CP) — Deliver-
ing a baby isn’t that com-
plicated, even if you're blind,
says 24-year-old Dave Mielke
who delivered his new baby
daughter almost two weeks

When Mielke's son was
born three years ago, his
biggest regret was not being
able to witness the birth. The
Bell Northern Research em-
ployee has.been blind since
childhood.

But when wife Ruby went
into labor on the afternoon of
June 6, Mielke became a mid-
wife and Ruby said she had
no qualms about her blind

husband delivering the child.
“I wasn't nervous about
just having Dave there,” said
Ruby, who gave birth to a
daughter, Melissa Christine,
in their apartment while sons
Mark and Allen looked on.
“He was in the delivery
room for both our sons and he
knows what's going on.”
