The light-hearted, highly glamorized TV portrayal of a cunning, deceitful woman is being earmarked as a highlight of the _homebred television season. = Everything about the TV film reeks of success, from Rob Iscove (Chautauqua Girl) as director to Douglas Bowie (Empire Inc.) as writer. CBC is predicting a large audience of 2.4 million for the three-hour movie. But there's strong U.S. competition tonight — Don Johnson of Miami Vice is in a two-part film, The Long Hot Summer, with Cybill Shepherd of “Oh,” Dale says, some color leaving her face on Jearning about the competition. The Long Hot Summer makes it a long uphill struggle for the Canadian yarn to meet its audience objective and give Dale recognition for her first-rate piece of work. CANADIAN WRITER... Oe October 6, 1985 SIMPSONS TRYING TO | HANGE IMAG Editor's note: O. an-upscale depai store, Simpsons has fallen on hard times in the last few years. The following story, the second of three, describes the efforts of Simpsons’ new president and advertising team to recapture the market, lgst to specialty’ shops. By ROBERT McLEOD TORONTO (CP) — The hammering of construction workers at Simpsons Ltd.’s flagship headquarters in downtown Toronto is evidence that the department store retailer is trying to march to the beat of a different drummer — a well-heeled, well¥ressed one that is more likely to want perfume ‘and !fashion than washing machines. Much of the store is being redesigned as depart- ments with the potential to make more money are SPECIAL REPOR expanded while others shrink, and modern boutiq within the store will try to erase the stodgy reputation that the chain acquired in recent years. Most of Simpsons’ other stores in Canada have also-been-earmarked~for some sort of face-lift-in due course. In addition, the company is spending millions of dollars on an advertising campaign to change its image and has hired Safger, Cravit and Freedman, a retail marketing specialist, to mount the advertising assault on the Canadian consumer. The old Sees Simpsons 1 Has Itis being replaced by bilk of bankers in a New York art scam in which she posed as Andrew Carnegie’s illegitimate daughter. “I think Betsy was one of the original material girls,” Dale says. “The more I read about her, the more I wondered about how she got away with everything. It really says something about bankers of the time.” ‘Appealingly filmed, but a tad long, Love and Larceny is Dale's showpiece. As the highly fictionalized Bigley she is in practically every scene. It's just the type of film that can be a career stepping stone — to the United States perhaps. Dale, whose husband Robert Lantos is one of the country's most nationalistic filmmakers, objects to the comnion belief that Canadians must be successful abroad to be so at home. “That may in fact be true, but we're here to disprove it,” says Dale, who has just finished a feature film for 1986, Separate Vacations. HALIFAX (CP) — Rich Little has few opportunities to do impersonations of Can- adians these days, but for him John Diefenbaker is still the all-time great. The Canadian-born perfor- mer now lives and works in the United States where, he says, it’s hard to keep up with Canadian news. He manages; though, to pick up CBC with his satellite dish. “It's always been a shame how ignorant Americans are about Canada. I've always felt Canada needed a good PR man in the U.S. But that hasn't stopped Little, who was in Halifax this week to perform at a fund-raiser for medical re- search, from trying Cana- dians from time to time. “(Prime Minister Brian) Mulroney you could work on Film gets cautious release By BOB THOMAS -LOS ANGELES (AP) — industry. filmmaker Jeremy Some reviewers agree Kagan was told by a burly with the director's assess- Flying back from Toronto's Chamberlain aide: “You ment of The Journey of Nat- Festival of Festivals with made me cry.” ty Gann. The Simpsons chain lost more than $52 million last year and was a major factor in the $107.4-million loss of its parent, Hudson's Bay Co. Nevertheless, Hudson's Bay vice-president George Kosich, one member of the new management team, says Simpsons will be in the black by the end of the year. “We expect . . . a $40-million decrease in our total this year” at Si he told the pany’s annual meeting. Much of this is the result of cutting more. ‘than 2,200 people from the payroll, but the company is taking other actions to tempt the consumer back into its stores. “We are changing the emphasis of our business more to fashion and other soft goods because they are more profitable,” says Simpsons president Al Brent. “Even- tually, we'd like 70 per cent of sales to be soft goods, up from the present 57 per cent.” Translated, that means Simpsons will be a better place to buy clothes and perfume than screwdrivers or appliances. “One of the things we have to do is cover the entire spectrum in clothing from budget: price line right up to The Room.” which distributes expensive women's wear, he said. “There is no reason why with our buying power we can't be very competitive in price — and we intend to In addition, the emphasis of the store has been changed from sprawling departments to more intimate boutiques. sons is the most visible victim of the problems _ “LICENCED DINING ROOM Open 4 P.M.
