For example, young children can usually bend over to touch theirzoes with ease, indicating supple back and hamstring muscles. But that flexibility tends to deteriorate with age. And failing to stretch regularly — even just five to 10 minutes a day — may lead to tight muscles that could set a person up for injury. “In fact, once people get injured, they go to physiotherapy and then are given stretching exercises as part of their rehabilitation,’ Stewart says. “It’s the old ‘after-the-fact’ story.” As a warmup before exercise, stretching helps prevent injury because it loosens the muscles, allowing them to work through a full range of motion. After a workout, it’s important to, stretch to avoid muscle and joint stiffness and soreness, says Charlene Prickett, Calgary-based host of the television exercise show It Figures.
